there is only 2 ways water can dissapear from the engine, it either has an external leak (gasket, hose etc) or the headgasket is gone and the engine is burning the coolant.. fill it up with water and get it pressure tested, and do a comp test.. only way you will know what the go is

if thair is no water on the ground or in the sump then its going out the exhorst eg: head gasket, cracked head or bore and if its a water coold turbo it could be going straight out the exhorst. if you are no good on the tools just take it to a workshop.

-head gasket
-cracked head
-warped head
-scored bore

this is only some of the things that can happen when an engine is overheated, even if you are just going to replace the head gasket, still get the head pressure tested & decked just to make sure 100% that everything is good.

but as already stated, firstly i'd get compression test.

Hmm really depends on how bad it is fella. If it's just the gasket then probably about $1k ish for a shop to do it. The costs will be 90% labour. If the head needs work you might as well reco it. Add another $500 to1K to the end price.

Hopefully the head isnt too damaged.
I recently got mine reco'd (rb25) and it was that banana'd the cam tunnels had to get line bored due to not being straight.
Was a costly excercise, just for head machining

Mate as I said the parts are the cheap bit. Approx $300 in parts and your done. The cost is in doing the job. It's a big job. Then if the head needs work there will be costs involved there too. Sorry man that's the way it is. Time costs money.
