Any ideas as to a suitable wiper motor upgrade for a 1971 Datsun 1600.

Just curious as to why you want to upgrade.
Is the motor schtuffed or do you just want something a bit fresher?
There is a lot of mechanical stuff that will affect the speed/perfomance of the original wiper motor

The motor has seen better days (its stuffed) and also something faster would be ideal.

I have heard that a wiper motor from a mazda with some small mods can be fitted but not sure as to which model and year the motor is from.

Take your wiper motor to a auto elec motor rewinder. Get them to rewind it so it goes faster (10 volt winding). A friend just had this done and his wipers are fast!!!

An auto elec motor rewinder? lol, never seen that in the yellow pages!
What are the mechanical things that have an effect on the speed of the motor?
Im considering getting a better one too, mines sooooooooooo slow!

There are a couple of other threads on this topic but briefly, I suggest the following.
1) Disconnect the wiper arm linkage from the rear of the motor, switch it on and check it has reasonable slow and fast speeds.
YES/NO?
2) Now check the mechanical linkage, you should be able to operate the wipers by rotating the motor arm by hand.
(Lift the arms off the screen or remove them to eliminate drag on the glass.)
YES/NO?
NO to 1) means motor is tired.
NO to 2) means that the pivots and linkages need a damn good lubing!
Fixing the pivots is relatively easy, just be patient in getting them apart if they are dry and corroded. Lots of CRC-556 and gentle pressure over several days and they should eventually come apart. There is or should be a wuzzy little circlip on the end of the shaft, remove and ditch it. Replace it with a decent external circlip from CBC.
Wire brush the shafts, thoroughly clean the tubes, lube it all with PH Zinc Oxide grease, check for smoooth rotation and finally fit new weather boots to the shafts

Thanks for the reply Nissanman,

It worked out to be a combination of both a tired motor and bits needing cleaning and lubricating. Since replacing the motor with a decent working one, I have found that a Mazda 626 1983 - 87, is almost a straight forward replacement only modification necessary is on the end of the motor's spline were the wiper arm assembly bolts to.

Might try it at a later date.

Thanks.
