Hi guys,

It seems that my 1969 has no Australia Compliance Plate. It has the ID plate with VIN number on it, and the stamped VIN number on the firewall, but no compliance plate. I have looked at a few photos of other 1969 Australian Datsun 1600's and they ALSO don't seem to have one. The later models had them on the firewall.

Firstly - Anyone know if this is the case, or if this will be an issue for registration?

Secondly - If they were meant to have one and it's gone, and I need it for registration, what can I do about it?

Thanks guys, any help appreciated.

It seems I MAY have found the answer to my own question - but I will post it here in case others ever have the same question.

Firstly, it seems compliance plates started from January 1970 (so yes, 1969 cars would NOT necessarily have one).

And compliance plates merely show the date of manufacture, build code, body number and what ADRs it complied with.
ALSO for cars in Australia, if they have been previously registered in Australia then it also doesn't matter if the compliance plate is missing.

Also, if the car was made from the mid 80s onwards it will have a 17 digit VIN plate, not a compliance plate.
If this VIN plate is illegible or missing, you will apparently NOT get it registered (according to comments by others on another forum).

Hopefully that info is helpful, it did seem to answer my issue.

And also found in the NSW RTA documents (although I'm in Vic, but it's still helpful) the following info:

"The Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007 requires a motor vehicle (except a tractor
or implement) first registered on or after 1st August 1972 to be fitted with a compliance plate.
Motorcycles first registered on and after 1st October 1976 are required to be fitted with compliance
plates."

And then for Victoria, in the Vic Roads VSI26 document:

"Identification (Compliance) Plates/
Vass Approval Certificates

Identifiction plates were required on vehicles
manufactured after June 1988 as evidence that, at the
time of first registration, the vehicle complied with the
applicable ADRs. However, identification plates are often
damaged, lost or stolen during the life of the vehicle.
Therefore, the presence of an identification (compliance)
plate is not a mandatory requirement for the issue of a
Certificate of Roadworthiness."

I have a 1971 from new and there was no Compliance plate.
We are talking VERY early days here for such formalities.
Some dealers fitted them if they felt inclined but most cars went without.
The year of your car is indicative that the powers that be should not insist on a plate.
