L16s are a wicked little engine. add a small turbo and they're so fun to drive, they rev like an RB26. i'd love to slot a worked L16 into a 1200 or a 120Y with a TD05 off a 98ish WRX.

other than that, never been a big fan of SR20s, but i love the CA18 conversions, they're a much better engine IMO for durability.

but pistons aside, my true love lies with those triangle shaped thingos that spin around really quick and sound like lawnmowers.....

CA into a ute. Easy enough to do with a little knowledge, and the power is perfect for how big the car is!

I also think that the L-series are a great engine...especially for thier age.
BUT my favourite conversion would definately be the CA18DET.

Mine would have to be both the L and RB series. I love the L cause my L is bullet proof, I give it hell and it doesn't die! And I like the RB series cause they're a 6 cylider that has heaps of potentional.

yep it's almost impossible to kill an L.

lumpy cam, twin 45's and stock valve springs.

i don't need a tacho or shift light, i just change up when it starts valve-bouncing

p.s. vaughan, i bought some 14-inch rims off you a year or so ago, dunno if you remember but i had the 'antarctic white' 1600

I started with a worked L20B with twin SU's in my 1600, blew the motor and went to L20B with Twin 45's. Got sick of that and dropped in a Z18ET

Sold the car and bought a 1600 with ca18, sold that and now own a 180bsss with a worked fj20ET...

After doing all this i think back and realise i had the most fun with my L20B 1600, you can wake up, start the engine and rev it out in first gear to redline and it doesn't mean sh*t, take it on dirt, through massive puddles etc..

Thats why i have in my garage the following parts for when i return to a 1600 for my daily driver;

Series 2 bluebird motor (complete, rebuilt 11,000 km's ago, was pulled out of a old man's bluebird), stanza dogleg 5 speed box

Single 45mm weber on a L series manifold

Pacemaker extractors off the same bluey motor

2 and a half inch press bent exhaust with dump pipe

180b front struts with K-MAC adjustable camber cast inserts and springs, rear K-MAC springs

4 point roll cage

TRX rims with rubber and wheel nuts, plus some comfortable seats

So if i buy a stock one i'll just add all these parts and have some old school fun!

(sorry for the lengthy off subject post but i felt it was slightly relevant)

In Summary, you cant go past the all round toughness and sound of a L20B with webers!

Cheers

I reckon I would agree with pro240c.

A well modified L16 is the most fun. Not the fastest by a long way, but just FUN to drive. Simple, reliable, robust, easy (and comparitively cheap)to modify.

It all depends on what you want out of the car I suppose.

Im kinda new to the whole engine thingy, and have been enjoying my Z18ET.....its more of a challenge because there are NO FRIKKIN BOOKS for them Mr bigglesworth....

I did the whole lot on my own (conversion from Z24 to Z18ET), only getting help from one single source....

***O Z D A T . C O M***

So thanks to everyone single one of you for all the help. Look forward to your help with a new 2.3l stroker bottom end!

But i do LUURVE FJ20t's....their just so big and strong! And the fastest car i been in had one....and it was FAST.

However, having been involved with Rally Association of Darwin, the L20 has to be the strongest, toughest, meanest cant kill me with a nuclear bomb engine EVER! I have so much praise for it after seeing up close and personal three seasons of a 200b with nothing but the lumpiest of cams and twin 45's on a datrally manifold and no exhaust get the sh*t beaten out of it at 9500 rpm for three years......and NOTHING went wrong (with the engine i mean, its been in five cars!) It was lucky if it got new oil twice a season, and i think it still has the same plugs!!!!

When I started building my latest 1600, my friends asked what donk I'd use - SR,or FJ. I said L series. Why? Because I had the bits, it was an easy job, and gave the best bang for the buck in the normally aspirated world. :)

My mates were skeptical. :?

So last weekend at Sandown, I was taking my mate's SR powered Escort through scrutineering and happened to see Anthony Koch's beautifully prepared 1600 under-2 litre Sports Sedan going through. This car had finished second overall at Mallala last month, and was impressively quick on the track.

And how chuffed was I to see an L20 with Webers sitting under that bonnet :!:

Cheers,

I say that ALL Datsun and Nissan engines are great, Drop the pants off most of them and you'll find yourself a close to bulletproof bottom end!

I'm sticking with the SR for my 1600, I know they can take a beating. My Primera has a SR20DE that has been totally thrashed and raped by me while still being a great daily driver, this has gone on for about 5 years and 160,000kms! Is now up to 240,000kms and still not showing any signs of wear or old age - still loves to sit on the 7,750rpm Fuel Cut!

So when the SR20DET is built for the Datto it'll be time to build a bigger and better SR20DE for the Primera - Maybe even a VE...

Fully sold! 8)
