Hi everyone,
New to this forum, and havent owned a dato since my 69 1600 back in the 70's.
Anyhow, the front muffler on my ute is rusting out where the manifold end pipe goes in.
I live in a remote area and figure I will need to replace the muffler.
I asume I cant just bog up around where the pipe goes in due to vibration etc.
So, am I best to buy one made for my ute, and if so, where do I get it from, or can I just use any old muffler that has the same size inlet and outlet pipe, and is long enough do fit.

Thanks

You can try and weld it if the metal isnt too rusty/thin. But might be easier to just replaceit.
Any old muffler should be fine so long as its similar in size so it matches up to the exh pipe and any hangers that support it.
Like you said, just measure the inlet and outlet pipe diameter and note where they enter the muffler (middle or offset at each end etc). Then measure the diameter and length of the muffler body and note if its oval or round in shape.
Call your nearest exhaust shop to see what they have similar or search online as the manufacturers often list dimensions of their mufflers. Try sites like Lukey, Walker, Remus, and even Ebay has some cheap ones...

I dont know much about 720's but depending on the year of yours it may be late enough to require a cat as the emission laws for these came in around 1986.
If yours is earlier than this you might be ok and it may just be a mid muffler or resonator you need.
Can you take a pic of it?
If you have to buy a cat they sell universal ones on Ebay for example anywhere from $50-$250 depending on brand and size...

No need for a cat. My 82 Kingcab only ever came with a small muffler at the rear.

I would just weld a bit of new tube in and forget about it.

If it's all shagged though, a cheap bolt in exhaust system would suffice.
