G'day. I've got the chance of acquiring a 1982 Junior ute. The old motor is a bit tired. My girl and I are thinking of touring Australia in it. I'd like to know if there's any decent modern lump that will drop in there. Maybe an engine and box together then alter the prop shaft. I don't really want to be messing around with new engine mount positioning. The body and chassis is in good nick. I'd probably look at overhauling the brakes too. Any advice or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that it is fitted with the H20 petrol engine?

Yes I think it is. Just waiting for details from the owner. Were they drum brakes all round?

Welcome to Ozdat :)

A Nissan L-series MAY bolt in, but if it does I am not sure what the situation with your gearbox would be. The one from your truck probably wouldn't bolt up and if it is column shift then finding an L-series gearbox to suit might be a challenge. As well as this, finding a good running L-series isn't as easy now as it used to be.

Had you considered rebuilding your existing engine? Doing that might be a cheaper and easier option. Neither option I have mentioned will be much, if any power improvement, plus both engines are now at the age where they aren't especially easy or cheap to find in good running order. Rebuilding yours would give you the peace of mind that everything is mechanically sound.

Feel free to post some pictures or start a build thread too :)

Thanks for the replies, fellas! I talked about it with my girl and we've decided it's not such a viable option anymore. It'll still be under powered and there are better vehicles to go touring in. It is a lovely old thing tho and eventually we do plan on reviving it. The ute is in country Victoria so the next time we're up there I'll take plenty of pics. Thanks again lads
