Good day guys

Just an update. I removed the head again and decided to go for the "sandwich". Used standard head gaskets on both sides of the copper plate and used the copper sealant aswel. No leaking gasket at the moment and havent blown anything yet. Still running 0.5bar of boost. The car isnt fast at the moment because of the very low compression ratio (about 7.4:1). So sorting out the ignition now and will turn up the boost later. The 7.4:1 comp ratio will be able to take a bit more boost than the higher comp ratios.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Im sure you know how to swap headgasket in your sleep by now

There was a guy on these threads with a stanza or 200b cant recall but he
was boosting his daily and dragstrip with great sucess over 20 years.
Some of the guys here cant prob point you towards his thread and he
finally had it for sale at one point but he ironed out all the bugs over decades
and beat many fancier later engined datsuns. I still think you should get
ARP head studs, they are cheap from the US these days as not many L series
tinkerers around anymore but also hope your block deck has no issues.

Good day people

Just a link to a video where the car is up and running. Still without an exhaust!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rup38Ena0AQ

Boost is about 0,5bar. Will lift it to about 1bar later. Will also put a better video on later.

Good day people

I thought I just share a photo of how the car looked like and how it looks now after spraying it.

Im busy with the last suspension repairs before the car can go through roadworthy. Then I will post another video of it going.

Cheers!

Howzit people

The car is running good but there is still an issue with the ignition system (or might even be fueling?)

The car idles fine and revs up fine when standing still and you use light throttle. If you floor the car from idle and it reaches about 2000rpms if starts backfiring through the carb.
The same happens when im driving. When you drive up an incline in a gear where the turbo hasnt spooled up yet, it starts backfiring.

It actually did this at higher rpms (2500rpm) in forth gear after closing the throttle and opening it again it started backfiring again.

Hope any one can help with this!

have a nice day
Jason

Does anyone have an idea of with can cause a misfire like the abovementioned?

I fitted the a new distributor cap, new plug leads, new points, new condensor, new plugs. Point gap set to 0.45mm and spark plug gap 0.9mm. Timing set to about 5degrees btdc at idle to give total advance of around 25degrees btdc at 3500rpm. Dont want to go with more advance to prevent gasket failure.

Compression ration about 7.4:1....

let me know what you guys think.

Have you checked a/f ratio's? It's probably running leaner now...

I went 2 sizes bigger on the secondary fuel jet. Did not want to change anything on the primary fuel jet because I thought that the turbo only boost higher when the secondary is already active?

Would you suggest going bigger on primary jet as well?

Yes, classic case of lean backfire as you're moving a lot more air now at all points in the rev range...definitely would be looking at increasing primary side jet sizing.

Also reminds me of the saying "90% of fuel problems are caused by ignition"....although you have renewed your ignition system parts (good!) I'd be keeping in mind that as you generate a lot more combustion pressure with the increased air flow / density, you might find that points ignition may not be able to keep up lighting off the mixture. Electronic triggered / amplified ignition may be in your future sooner than you think....

Thanks Pista 510!

Was definitely lean backfire. I changed the primary fuel jet from 105 to 120. The secondary jet was changed from 165 to 180. This greatly improved the lean backfire and the car was much more driveable. After this change the car would still backfire, but only with quick throttle openings. this was an issue if you tried to shift quickly to a higher gear and floored the gas and it started backfiring. This issue was sorted by changing the ratio on the pump jet arm to squirt more fuel when opening the throttle. Now it goes great! Turbo boosts about 1 bar (14psi) and nothing broke yet.
I think im managing to suck the float bowl dry when flooring the gas long in 3rd gear and it reaches high rpm. then i can feel a decrease in power. So will need to make the inlet valve into the carb a bit bigger to make sure it gets enough fuel.

Im very pleased with the results so far!

Thanks for all the help!
Regards
Jason

I tried to keep it as cheap as possible... In the end it goes really well. Just burns a lot of oil!! Need to make a plan with the turbo oil seal.

Good day people

Here is another video of the L18 turbo Skyline. This was on basically level road. might have been a bit downhill. Car pulling from 100kmh in 4th gear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRY9omz39Aw

With a few improvements it can definitely pull a bit better, but not bad for now.

Have a nice day!
Jason
