Post subject:  SR20DET half cuts

I am now in the market to buy an SR20DET halfcut. I am in melbourne victoria, and would like to know where the best place is.

I am interested in an S13, but would like to get my hands on an S14.

Any recommendations on what people have bought, and what price should I be looking at (approx)?
Is getting a 180SX half cut better than a silvia?

What sort of quick checks can you perform just by looking at the motor to get a general idea of condition. (I know the one about the condition of the sludge on the cam cover, and the amount of wear on the cam gears) Anything else?

Cheers.

Graham,

Yeah, dont know, just that I have heard that getting a half cut is easier than getting it all seperate. That way nothing is cut off, and you just have to remove it from the chassis, and put it into the car.

If you reckon getting a motor/gearbox/computer/loom assy is fairly easy, then I might venture down that path.

The reason I ask in the 'melbourne area' is so I can have a choice. I have seen these motors being sold for stupid amounts of money because the demand is up. Also, it gives me a chance to find the best one, and purchase accordingly!

motor/gearbox/loom/computer is all that you should need.......PLMS do looms with all the relays and that sort of stuff for 275 there abouts they look really good.........if you go to there website they have a fair bit of information on what you should look out for........as when i picked up my engine i made sure it had all the bits that i would need......the bloke didnt have a gear lever in the box so i asked for another one and they where only to happy to help. make sure it has engine mounts......that arent broken.......and gearbox mounts that arent broken like the ones that i had......thanks mal for helping me out on that one and baz...what else wpuld you use from a half-cut????? brakes/rotors????intercooler???? for the money that you would save on getting a engine pakage you could spend on getting a upgrade over standard over a half-cut.......

all i can says is shop around. if you know how much these engines are going for then look interstate and if one is cheap then ask for shipping to melb.....i did that and it would of worked out cheaper if i could get a engine for 2500 and 500 for shipping.......but i found one for 2750 so it worked in my favour........i can highly reccomend all sate imports in brisbane....there flat rate for a s13 red top is 2750........so if you find that they are dear in vic then ask for shipping from bris to melb.........it MAY be worth it
