The 44mm SU is the right size for a 2 litre.
plenty of respect Baz.... but if a 2.4 litre engine cam from the factory with a pair of 44mm carb's wouldn't that imply that a pair of 38's would be ok for 2 litres? (guess what size my SU's are....)

Cheers, Neil

Umm, isnt the fact that the parts DO wear out in them what makes them unreliable :?: ... not just the tuning side.

Heres trouble :P
Don't Webers need rebuilding due to wear also ?

They are ok but not the right size for good power.
we ran 38mm SUs on 1275 cooper S
MGB s 1800cc factory 44mm SUs
Datsun 2000 sports 44mm Jap SUs or solex phh depending on model.
New SUs are good for 15 years and then you need to replace needles & jets. The prob with the 180bsss units are that the jets & needles are expensive.
Jets for SUs are plentiful & inexpensive.
Have fitted 44mm SUs to plenty L series & have fitted them to L18s with good results.
Well set up good condition SUs are no harder to tune than webers & will stay in tune just as well. As with webers a lot is in the throttle linkage set up.
