Expect to pay anything from 2k to 2.8k. Just ring around the Jap importers and quote prices that other shops have quoted. That way you should get a good deal. Don't forget to get some sort of warranty though. The Sr20's are getting older

All the blacktop SR20's came with VVT. Note the VVT is only on the intake cam though. I would go a red Top SR20DET. Bolt a S15 Jap Spec T28 Ball Bearing turbo on and it will preform just as well as the Black top version. You can also get the red Top SR20DET's factory ECU remapped for the new trubo, Z32 afm, and larger injectors. Will will need to speak to Dr Driff (Sam) I have lost his number but you can PM him at nissansilvia.com. The Black top ECU is a different beast though and so far can not be played with. And red top is cheaper and there are sh*t loads of them around.

Is is a 180sx? If it is yes then some Later 180sx's with the round tail lights came with Black tops. No S13 Silvia came with a black top though. If yours has one its been transplanted. I was under the impression that all black tops came with VVT. Maybe you have a blacktop rocker cover on a red top motor?
And yes the ECU's changed when the black top came out they look the same and are wired the same but they don't work in the same way. Trust me I have tried and failed with mates cars, it don't work :( .

The red tops ecu is easily remaped. You need a badbiki daughterboard which plugs in to the stock ecu inside the box. It holds 2 eprom's which will enable you to hold 4 different maps. so you can have different tunings :D . It is easy to install. all you have to do is remove 1 surface mount resistor and away you go. Of course you must go and have you car dynoed to see any real results from this. It's worth it though. All up it cost me about $600 which includes the daughter board and dyno time. Its is quite cheap and is hidden from the Fuzz. Where as the aftermarket managment costs heaps more plus installation and dyno time on top. Saying this though I now use a safc as I got one cheap from asia :D.

There are black-top non-vvt SR20DET's.
And all can be remapped.

Cool. I have never seen or heard of one. I'm only saying what I know from my experiance. And I stand corrected. No need to get shirty over such trivial things guys. We are all here for the same reason are we not?

Cheers

late s13s are black top.
the ECU is different, has logic system & the ECU wiring is different.
These can be modded as ders said.
also has T28G turb.
Much better value as they usually have lower Ks.
