Here there folks,
as many of you know, im currently investigating the prospect of a full blown 1600 build up, and i was wondering what your advice whould be for cooling a transplanted SR20DE? i noticed that in the case of the L20, standard advice is to simply re-core the standard radiator to a 3 core and leave it at that.

is this a viable option in the case of the SR20? im looking at a turbo later on down the track when the insurance isn't going to kill me, so i'd prefer to minimise the number of parts i have to replace.

If re-coring is the way to go, could anyone recommend a place in Sydney that will do a good job?

cheers
Rob/.

i am using just the standard radiator at the moment with my sr20de. (the higher compresion s14)

it is hooked up to the computer so it switches on only when its hot.

it only ever comes on when sitting idling for at least 5 minutes after driving.

if you dont plan doing the turbo conversion too soon i would suggest just leaving it till then and save your money!

how does that work? are we talking a thermofan or radiator here?

i'm tempted to leave it (yeah, im looking at the S14 VVT SR20DE) but im not entirely sure. i dont wanna melt a $2000 engine on the off chance it may be up to the task. the car will most probably be used on the track fairly frequently.

anyone know of any good places in sydney for a radiator re-core?

cheers
Rob/.

I'm currently running an S14 DE motor in my bluebird with a stock (reco'd) series 2 bluebird radiator and thermo fan. The motor's been in the car for about 12 months now and I've never had any trouble with high temps. The only time I've had any cause for concern was idling in 35 degree heat in peak hour traffic, the temp got up to about 82 degC. (I'm planning on installing 280ZX bonnet vents shortly to reduce under bonnet heat by a little.)

My temp guage reads about 10% too high (reads 110degC when the water is boiling - tested it with a kettle) so when i say 82 deg, I mean the temp guage was on 90.

The majority of the time, however, the guage sits on about 84 deg, so the motor should be sitting on about 76.

thanks for your help fellas. im gonna speak to datsport and see what they recommend, but from the sounds of it the stock radiator should do the trick.

i ran a stock one on my z18. used to cook up on a hard boost day.(1bar on stock turbo) it would cook up and cant cool it. blew 3 head gaskets from it.
got myself a custom alloy single 32mm core mate up for 400 bucks. now my running temp sits at 80.c and my thermostad is a 82. but this is too cold. if im driving on the freeway the car becomes weird because its so cold. sometimes his low 70.c's

I run a N13 pulsar radiator with my SR20T/180B conversion.

Picked it up at the wreckers for $30 and it works a treat! The radiator is double core and it's very thin and long. I had to cut the radiator hole bigger to take advantage of it's larger size. It is also a 'crossflow' radiator, wich means the tanks are on the sides. Don't know what the advantages of this are!
