Hey guys, what spark plug heat rating should i use in my datsun 1600 rally car? It's got a mildly tuned l20 bluebird motor but with mechanical ignition and twin Su's. I ran NGK BP6-ES's as suggested by NGK but they foul up when cold! My old L16 (mech. ign and SU's) used BP5-ES's which I assume is a hotter plug so it burns the sh*t off easier? Should i go for the hotter BP5-ES's? NGK reckons if you use a plug that's too hot it will melt and destroy pistons :( ...
thanx

Is the car tuned well? If its running mega-rich its going to foul up irrespective. I run BP7ES in my turbo L28 (down to 11:1 AFR) and it doesn't foul at all. I'd suggest a tune.

Oh and a spark plug melting is pretty uncommon I'd've thought, more likely it'll detonate and break a piston that way.

yeah, it's tuned well - set up on a dyno and all that. It runs fine once it's warm, just cokes the plugs when its cold. Do you reckon it's safe to use BP5ES without doing any damage? Does anyone run these in their L20?

Yeh I used to run 5es's on my worked L20b, same reason too as it used to blacken up when it wasn't getting a good booting ( which wasn't as often as I would have liked as it was a daily) never had any probs, but i was running a scorcher 'leccy dizzy.
