Thanks to all for the advice. As this will have to be a N/A engine, I'm going to go the high comp/non-turbo route.

I've heard that you can get an LD28 diesel crank into an L26, has anyone done/heard of this before? Apparently compression goes up to around the 10 mark. Any advice on doing this? And any suggestions on who's the best person in Melbourne to see for parts? I'll be over in about 5 weeks, and would like to email someone and get some ideas before I go spending all my cash!

People use the LD28 cranks for 3.1 stroker buildups. They are meant to be as rare as rocking horse sh*t, and when people talk about the price of them they seem to use figures floating arround the $1000-$2000 mark. I guess they wouldnt be bad if you were doing a big dollar buildup, but that money could mean some pretty wild head work etc.

Can get the crank cheap enough - $100 for a complete running motor. Over here diesels are everywhere (lots of Japanese imports). Assuming that a) finding a crank isn't that hard and the crank is fine, and b) cost is not a problem, what else, apart from valve/head clearances, needs to be looked at? Are the bearings the same (do they bolt straight in or need modification), what pistons would be best (want a high comp. ratio) etc.

Any suggestions?

There has been an awful lot written about 3.1L buildups over the years. Do a google search.

If you can get LD28 cranks for $100 I'll take two please. Seirously.

in fact i'll pay you $100 to send me an LD28 crank, on top of the $100 asking price.
