you'll find it does fit - there's just a little trick.

basically you put the cam gear inside the chain and put both on together. much easier that way. then put a small piece of wood on the gear and tap it home with a hammer. make sure the lugs line up or it won't seat against the cam properly and that's a recipe for disaster.

the only other thing i can think of is the timing chain tensioner. i hope you chocked the timing chain against the guide with a bit of something, or the chain tensioner will have popped out and be pulling the chain short. the only way to rectify this is to loosen the sump and timing cover and pop it back in, keeping the chain taught and then chock it in position while you fit the cam gear.

once the gear is in place, dont forget to take the chock out or you'll be scratching your head for a looooong time as to why it wont turn over.... :!:

Did you put a wedge in to stop the chain tensioner from moving when you took the old head off?

Haha, common thing to happen...
Did you stick a wooden wedge down the timing cover?
I bet a 100% that the timing chain tensioner has dropped out.
This means you'll have to remove the timing chain housing, refit it the tensioner then replace the housing.
A good afternoons (or day!) job...

Don't worry mate. Many people here have done it before. That is maybe the only thing I hate about the L engines.
