i'm no expert whatsoever on Z series swaps, but isn't the starter in a different spot on Z series engines...? don't you just need the Z bellhousing on the L box and you're away?

it'd be cool if it were a direct bolt on.

The starters are on the same side.

I think the L boxes will physically bolt up, but your gear stick would be in your passengers leg.

I would be looking and searching to see what you can come up with.

Pro and datto_boy are both pretty well on the money. Bolt pattern and starter location is the same. Only difference is that the bolt pattern is rotated in relation to the box itself. Imagine cutting the first few inches of the bellhousing off, turning the box round maybe 10 degrees and welding the bellhousing back on again. This is to accomodate the fact that the Z18 leans the opposite way to an L-series in the engine bay (ie leans towards passenger side).

End result is that the "gearbox" part is simply rotated a bit towards the passenger if you use an L-series box on a Z18. Could probably get away with bending the gear lever to straighten it up ?

Ideal solution is as pro240c says, use the Z bellhousing on the 240K box.

I would imagine that the bellhousing swap would be no problems, I have used a CA18T box on my Z18 and it fit with only the need to change the front input shaft bearing to a smaller diameter one.

FJ20 box is your best bet.

Ca18T box is a great option on the back of a Z18, ratios are good and the box will take 350hp, modern box and syncros and cheap $300ish dollars, i may have a bellhousing for sale to suit this conversion.

PM me if you are interested.

SO could this box work on an L20b then? I am having drama's with my 280zx box and want something a little stronger syncro wise.

I would say yes but you would have to have a look at the two box's/bellhousings next to each other I only had to run the z bearing on the input shaft (smaller than the ca18 bearing and it bolted straight up). You then have the option of short shifters and much better ratio's.

Dont forget about the trusty old cheap ca20 boxes as a option, z18 and fj boxes are around $500 big ones from a importer.

ca20 box from a gazelle can be had for around $50 to 90 bucks.
