Hi,

Has anyone used the type that allows the head to remain on the block? If so, does it require the camshaft to be removed?
And, where can I get one?

Thanks,

Rod

Yes Rod.......it's called 2 "big mother fudger" screwdrivers and a mate with a steady hand and a pen magnet.
Compress the spring with the screwdrivers then remove the collet(spelling?) with the magnet. (note: it might "fly" out so watch out)

Works for me each and every time.

I've never used one Rod, but I've been told there very unreliable (e.g. they let the valve drop).
I belive you just have to remove the rockers - thats all.

I heard u can hold the valve up with compressed air.

The ones with the head off are a pain so I cant imagine what the ones with it on are like...

or you can rotate the bottom end until the piston in question is at TDC, and not have to worry about valves falling deep into the bore.

Thanks guys, I thought the 'head on' versions may have been dodge. Might give the screwdriver trick a go :)

Yep the compresed air theory is the best way. Get an old stuffed screwin type compression tester cut the meter off and conect this to your compressor hose. set the reg a lowish PSI and screw the comp tester in to the spark plug thread. Have the car in gear so the motor does not turn. Then take your rockers out and you will need a spring compressor . Don't get the big type with the handle on top there're sh*t for datsuns. King chrome make a small type which has two arms with clips that slide in under the base of the srring you wind it up and the retainer will pop off. don't lose your valve keepers. Are you doing your valve stem seals? or upgrading your spring to H/D? The screw driver method is hard and you are sure to loose fly bits when the retainer pops if not you eye.

TIP: The Kingchrome is a PIECE OF sh*t!

The affordable versions of On-head or overhead valve spring compressors are not tools to keep in the long term, as the threads on the centre shaft are destroyed very quickly, and the body jaws are crappy casts. Yuo'll also find the affordable ones are extremely hard to use with a shithouse grip.
