Hey fellers, quick question probably aimed towards the more knowledgable guys due to the age of the components;

What are the differences between the A series datsun motor and the J series?

Are they similiar block wise (e.g. Z18 and L18) or are they completely different.

Reason im asking is because im looking at purchasing a 411 bluebird wagon that is complete minor the motor but with auto box.

Im thinking a J series would be pretty hard to locate in any condition, so a A15 would be a nice choice if it bolted in.

Im hoping someone can help me, Baz I think you know a bit about these motors?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Martin

someone else had a question about J series engines a while ago too - maybe it was on 1200.com... i thought they were the same but apparently there are some serious differences. here are some things i learned

the J series is a metric version of the BMC A series.

there were some earlier versions, but the most common are the J13 and J15.

the J15 has a longer stroke than the A15 - and no, the rods and crank aren't compatible - the rods have a different journal size and i think i read something about the crank journals being at different centres too.

the heads have about the same flow as an early A12A head. i dunno if this is the same as any other A12 head though...

an A series is almost a straight bolt in - just use the J series mounts like you would putting a 120Y A12 into a datto 1200.

i don't think anyone has built a "performance" J series because they rev like a diesel due to their LONG stroke - but for a peak hour crawler i dare say a little weber and a nice cam and it would be a very economical daily.

that's about it from me...

Im in scotland at the moment, but will be back in sydney sometime, any chance you would sell the engine mounts?

Thanks for the info Pro240c, how to bolt a A series in its place was the main bit I was looking for, and if a J series auto box will bolt up to a A series block and fly.

cheers

Martin

the good thing is the gearbox has the same bolt pattern as the Lseries gearboxes(basically the same box structure maybe diff ratios), the box is bolted to a plate at the back of the jseries block, so if the plate can bolt unto the aseries u might have a good thing going.

would I be right in assuming that would mean we could put L-series 5-speeds on A-series motors... surely someone would have cottoned onto this.

there's plenty of 620's in wreckers.

but the the Aseries 5 speed has the same ger ratois as the Lseries n the box isnt any stronger...

but i dont know for sure if the box will fit.....it all depends on if the plate can bolt unto the aseries block.

79.5mm bore on some
and 90mm stroke on the j18
I think that one had the 80mm bore from factory.
Would make a nice supercharged engined or turbo.
the j18 is from india and mexico and about 1770cc

the only problem is the 3 inlets and twin outlet head like the old mg engines or mini ones. However there is a twin cam for them but been pommy castings they where well...as good as poms tennis players in wimbledon. however 150bhp for the twin cam isnt too shabby from factory.
