Post subject: | Subaru 4.444 VLSD diff to Datsun 1600? |
Hi guys I'm looking at a Subaru WRX diff with a 4.444 ratio I'm sure its a VLSD an looking to fit it into my Datsun 1600 which has a 240k diff. what are the pro's an cons? does anyone have this set up already? I know there are Subaru R160 Adapter Stubs available to suit the Datsun shafts, but wanting to run the R180 (can import Stubs from the States) the car particulars are its a 1970 Australian Assembled vehicle it is powered by a twin Weber fed cranky L20 from a Bluebird with a 5 speed box which is most likely from a 240k, looking at for a fun zippy machine & not out to set land speed records. knowing there is thousands of previous posts mentioning this from way back in 2008 stating the VLSD is evil an a pre 90's R200 would be the go.. after skimming though a Jillion posts already, rather cut straight to the point for my application. Thanks for the help in advance cheers! |

Pretty sure the R180 stubs from US (and those available here) don't suit VLSD, they're made for the clutch plate type LSD's. VLSD need a unique stub with two different splines on the one shaft on one side. R200 is big, heavy, expensive and overkill for an L-series powered 1600 I run a 4.44 R160, love the ratio. Its a bitza - open 4.44 from late Subaru fitted with clutch plate LSD from Subie RX turbo. |

The later vlsds don't have the extra spline and have a smaller viscous pack that drives off the standard spline. Depending on how much lsd action you want (I suspect they won't give you much) it could be a good cheap solution. But sounds like a clutch pack STi R180 and those stubs is more suitable for.you. |
