Has anyone out there done a rear coil over conversion on there car?
Im looking into this as i would love to use the HR31 rear arms and being able to run a coil over strut means more likely hood of getting a adjustable damper on the chosen strut.

I have two options ive looked at so far both seem they would work with out to much problem.
Would just have to change the top mounting design.

Either a Mazda Demio (Ford mini wagon)
Or a Honda Torneo (also known as a accord spin off).

If anyone else has any ideas photos id love to know.

Thanks
Brett

what car you talking about? A 1600? There'd be a fair bit stuffing around, wouldn't you need to cut out and weld in a spot in the boot for the struts to go?

We have a half completed proto type we have been playing with.
Cut down 910 tube with Z31 inserts /front CO kit.
rear strut brace.
so far its all looking good.
This is for Cammos 16 so you will see it at the Nats.
Whent this way as common parts can be used & the Z31s are a nice rate for a 16.

is the strut brace just an easy way to strengthen the top shock mounts?

and is the coilover springs at the bottom of the shock?

Yip going into a 160J (similar to a 1600)
To change the part in the boot would be a piece of piss (i have a panel beater as a brother inlaw so that helps)
Hes said its easy as.

I can get hold of my HR31 rear shocks that i gave away to look at.
but i really want something with adjustable damper option for getting power to the ground in the launch.
Im just trying to decide what strut and spring to use. Im not sure if moving the spring back to the shock mount point will require a stiffer spring to be used due to the new pivot point. (probably the wrong term to use but i guess you know what i mean).
Plus i can use the HR31 rear arms which offer alot of benifits.

Baz do you have any idea on a spring rate that would be good for the road and also good for the strip?
I need to get a adjustable rear cross member kit off you at some stage along with a couple other things. Just trying to knock the credit card down a little before i use it to purchase more parts.
Id like to know more about the set up your useing in your car.
Did you use the factory top had from the Z31 strut etc???

Spring rates are around the same as front.
ie if 200 front, then 200 rear is about the mark.
Given the weight balance of a 16 this would be a good start point.
I like them a bit firmer in the rear.

If you look at a front coil over set up, fit spacer & bushes where the pillow mount is,
remove the stub axle & fit a ring as per std 16, then you will get the idea.

I have been running a coilover setup im my 1600 for a little while now. I am running r30 rear arms in a slotted rear crossmember (a must as toe in is enormous with the different arms!) the arms if located in the position allow the use (just) of standard r30 shafts, the track gets increased though by an inch and a bit. The hard part is the coilover. Mine is a 4wd koni adjustable that was modified to suit by koni. I did not pioneer the setup but have tweeked it a little since i've been using it. As for spring rate i have gone for slightly less in the rear 300lb front 250lb rear and really like how the car handles on the track, its not stiff at all.

Awesome man thats great.
Would you be able to tell me if you used a two bolt top mount of was your strut a bolt in job with the single bolt top mount?

Cheers for all the info..
I bolted up the R31 Arms and yip same thing toe in is huge!!!!
but nothing i don't believe can't be corrected with a nice DIY kit from baz.

Ill have to measure up the track next to decided if im going to move my mount points in on my cross member to allow for the extra track and hopefully a bit more rubber.
I have 8" rims under there now piece of cake with no rubbering and not any flareing on 235 tyres (which is what i'll run for the road due to replacement costs) But id love to get a 255 under there for the track.

Anyway all looks promising LAG _510 if you could take some photos of your top mount point in your boot that would be great.

Thanks
Brett

my top mount is standard, no need to complicate things! my shock basically uses a coilover top spring plate and then a standard 1600 style plate over the top of the rubber in the car. i am going to install a rear strut brace tomorrow probably so i'll take some pics then but it doesnt really show anything.

On the Baz DIY kit i used that but had to further modify the inner mount points by trimming 10mm of the crossmember side before installing them to lessen toe in and then had to trim 10mm off the arm side of the outer mounts as they hit the arms when trying to lessen toe in.

i have 8's on the rear but only just!

just wanting to keep this thread going...what do people think about these? are they all bolt-in units or do they require further modifications to fit? what would the ride-height adjustability be like?
