My tie rods did not want to fit into the steering linking and i wasnt keen on hitting them in with a hammer. are you suppose to get these pressed in or is there a trick to it?? They don't go in far enough to get the bolt on the other side

A BFH is NOT recommended
Make sure that the taper does match the bore and is not too big.
Highly unlikely but check it just the same.
You might have to use a G clamp or similar to press the taper into the bore and compress the rubber boot at the same time.
All things being equal you should then be able to start the castellated nut.
Make sure the ball joints are well lubed.
They will fart the grease out of a vent hole when they are full

The tapered bore maybe all gunked up. Get an old tooth brush and solvent in there and some corse sand paper and clean the **** out. Try Nissanman's G clamp tip as well just make sure every thing is clean and a tiny dob of greace may help out too.

As MYDAT said, i always take the opportunity to clean this area and then grease the tapered bit. Never had any trouble... sometimes with the new boot it wants to keep springing out but i usually get it on enough to screw the nut on and tighten it up.

from memory it was fairly clean, but shall try both of these didnt think of a g clamp! I think it is just a case of they are machined to be a precise fit and so take a bit of pursading to get on. just like the damm crush tube on the lower controll arm bush  thanks guys.

If you are wary about using a G clamp you should be able to push, by hand, the ball joint stud through the hole and do the required compression of the ball joint rubber.
It shouldn't take much force to do

If all is clean and they dont fit by hand - they are the wrong ones. Note, the tie rod ends on the outside are different to the tie rod ends on the inside (but they still have the same tapper).

Another thing to check, is that you have the right steering arms, I think 120Y, 1200, stanza have steering arms with smaller tapper holes.

How on earth can someone be told to put grease in a tapered hole--the taper will turn in the hole not so?

Probably not, lot of locking power in a taper, but it would certainly not be recommended practice.

Well, maybe not grease but I always put some Coppercoat or Neversieze on the taper to prevent galling.
It doesn't affect the function of the joint and certainly won't slip once it is all torqued up tight!
