graeme to the rescue again, thanks mate. i need you on speed dial, though you may find me highly annoying after a week :D

now that i think of it, i do remember someone telling me to discard top plate altogether if using super pro bushes. any comments? surely that rubber edge would take away some vibration/road noise?

Don't know whether it is a damper or a bump stop but I wouldn't advise doing without it.
Unless the Superpro bushes come with instructions to the contrary, I would retain all the OEM washers and just replace the OEM bush with Superpro.

I've always thought the rubber bits on the washers was just a "bump stop" - in normal driving, they just sit there and don't do anything, they just act as a bit of a "buffer" if for some reason the crossmember manages to move around enough to touch them ?

In which case, there would be no advantage to removing them ?

Check the length of the crush tube supplied with the bushes.
You must have sufficient pressure on the bushes to stop movement.
We rarely use super pro.
Do not use the top washer.
just the lower inverted cup, large washer, nyloc.

The upper castelated rubber washer was used to prevent noise, ie as Dave said. ^^
