Depends on the setup, the steering in mine was VERY heavy due to lots of caster and lots of scrub with semi slicks. Made it impossible to be competitive in tight tarmac motorkhana courses.

A properly fitted steering box brace will sufficiently lighten the steering in a 1600.

Mine's extremely heavy at carpark speeds - same as Tyrie, I run 4.5 deg camber and as much caster as it will take without needing to chop guards.

Once you get moving, especially on the track, you don't notice it at all. Too much else to worry about if you're really having a decent go

an old patrol, or possibly a 280zx had the power steering setup that used a steering box VERY similar to a 1600. rather than having to mod to suit rack and pinion, this could be worth researching

Some 280ZX had a steering box similar to a 1600. Not sure what series it was, others were rack and pinion.

I had a complete 280ZX front end a while back, was looking at using it in my 180B SSS, but ended up going with a 200B front end. Still have the 280ZX front end with the exception of the steering box - it went to the dump. This is all hypothetical (based on the measurements I made back then), but here's my theory :

Given that you use a 1600 steering box / pitman arm with the Datsport front end (I believe) you should in theory be able to do the reverse (use a 200B steering box / pitman arm with a 1600 front end).

A 280ZX track rod is almost identical to a 200B track rod (just a little longer), so if the 200B pitman arm bolts onto the 1600 track rod, the 280ZX pitman arm should also bolt onto the 1600 track rod.

The 280ZX steering box is a big, heavy lump, and the bolt spacings are different to a 1600 box, so you'd need to do something there.

Might be possible to dodgy up, but for a track car I'd still go with the better feel of non-power steering and also take advantage of lighter weight and less complication. But that's just my way of doing things - I've stuck with non-boosted brakes for the same reasons yet plenty of people see that as a neccessity

thread hijack... Dave, i've always wondered about non-boosted brakes on the 1600. i always found the original setup had such a great pedal feel, even with 240k/z twin-pot calipers.
question is, on a road-rego car with an SR20DET and 4 wheel disc, can i get away with unboosted? would it even be sufficient??

answers welcome by PM so this thread can stay on topic.

Don't see why not - boosted doesn't make it stop any faster, just means you don't have to push as hard on the pedal to make it stop.

would the 4 wheel disc have an affect though? and with the turbo motor, it's more about what the licensing department and engineers decide is acceptable when upsizing motors. we are at their mercy if we want a road-reg car.

the engineers will wont to see a booster! and i think thay will not pass 240k breaks with an sr20det because thay are solid.

i personally will always have a booster on a street car, and think the feel of a small can booster is excellent :woohoo:
