Post subject:  Advice on front end anyone?

In the name of the father, the son and the holy Datsun......Amen

I will soon put up a post of my 180b SSS rebuild thats happening but in the meantime I am looking for any words of wisdom regarding front brakes / suspension.

I have spent a lot of money so far on engine, gearbox and LSD diff to put a blacktop SR20DET (S15) into the car. I am about to repaint the engine bay and then the fun begins. One of the first things I need to do is look at front suspension and brake combo. I plan on hopefully zipping up the engine to get about 200kw (which means more money!!!) and really putting it through it's paces.

I know datsport and maddat other half decent brake/sus packages with the upper end packs at $2500 - $3500 BUT is there another way, a better way, cheaper way.

Eventually discs will go on the back but I will worry about that later.

Don't mind spending the money as long as I get great handling and stopping power any words of wisdom and how other people have gone with there front ends (suspension / brakes) would be great.

Cheers

Depends how handy you are at modifying suspension and brakes I guess.
There are some great FAQ threads on here about various struts and brake combo's that are commonly used.
Ive personally used 1600/200B/240k/R31 and 180B struts over the years with various caliper combo's like 4piston rx7 and r32, sumitomo twin piston etc.
Try to go with the shortest strut and shock absorber you can find or make fit.
At the very minimum id suggest a 240k strut with its twin piston sumitomo caliper and solid rotor (combined with rear discs).
I also recommend the 280zx strut and vented rotor as a good oem starting point.
R31 struts are nice and short and have vented rotors but the offset always bugged me on that setup and restricts the rims you can use on them.
There are plenty of different ways to do it 'cheaper' but you can learn some good things from companies like Datsport and Maddat who have spent years designing these things for our datsuns.
My current 1600 setup is 'shortened' 180B struts, r31 shocks, commodore calipers and custom vented rotors.
This setup fits under some 13inch rims, maintains oem offset, was cheap to build and works very well.
There are many ways to skin a cat though...

Sorry mate a little bit of a high jack but does anyone know what upgrades can be done to a 1600 front end brake wise with still being able to use the stock 13inch steel wheels?

Cheers,

Richard

200b struts with girlock brakes fit the standard 13inch rim. Would be plenty for an SR20 NA if you rebuild the calipers and have good pads.

Easy and cheap.

Blackhart, what do you want to use the car for?
There are a number of conversions on this site. I suggest you do a search for the following:
RX7 calipers
BMW calipers
Volvo Calipers
Hilux calipers

All of these are 4 piston and are either alloy or cast iron and made for excellent braking ability. The choice of disk size is really governed by what kind of tyres and then wheels you want to run.
The decision of running a particular Master Cylinder and booster (if you want) is discussed on this forum in a fair bit of detail. Have a read and let us know if you have any questions here.
