Assuming you have the wiring correct, you may have an AUTO loom instead of a MANUAL or vice-verse.
The AUTO loom has extra wiring for the INHIBITOR switch which needs to be bridged out on a MANUAL trans. car.
Time to do some fundamental checks as ^^ said.

You need to bridge these two wires [Black with Yellow tracer], that takes the place of the Inhibitor switch contacts: -

Sounds like you are hot on the trail.
Get someone to turn the key to START and you should see 12V on one of the BY wires.
The other BY wire should go to the spade terminal at the starter.
If so, join the two BY wires together and you should be good to go :)

Not necessarily.
You will need to find the power feed for the START circuit.
Have a look at this link and the schematics within.
http://www.mediafire.com/?t0932sd6ev7cu
You need to look for a schematic for the Auto but apart from the inhibitor switch problem any schematic will suffice.

I just edited my last post to show a typical START circuit.
Are you using a key in the lock or a screwdriver in the switch to crank it?
Don't turn the ignition switch too far over to crank the engine if you are just turning the switch, it will go past the correct position and do nothing.
You now need to check for some voltages.
Have a break and we will try again later :)
