I'm about to start wiring up my ca18det into my 1600 the harness is still connected to the motor and ecu but is a major mess with wires hanging every where that are obcelete and there is a fuse block that is melted, apparently before I brought the car it was hooked up and running but I presume pretty dodgy would I be best to disconnect everything off the motor and start from scratch and where is the best place to mount ecu etc etc
The joys of taking over someone else's build

If the ECU from the donor car was inside the cabin, then replicate that.
An engine that old would not have the ECU in the engine bay.
I have the CA18/DET wiring diagrams if you need them

Well,you do have some choices.
1. stay with the stock ECU and its' associated clap trap which means re-rehabilitating what you have or,
2. go to an after market ECU and start with a fresh loom etc.

1. could be a big job if you are not inclined to a wee bit of adventure

Done some research looks like it might be easier and better in the long run to get microtech lc10

I personally prefer Haltech but there you go.
There are a lot of used ECUs bobbing up on ebay so you might find something suitable there

A Haltech is your best choice in my opinion, they have come along in leaps and bounds recently and MT has been left a long way behind. If you do decide on a Haltech, contact Dale at Castle Hill Exhaust. A PS500 will do the trick if you are on a budget, although a PS1000 would be ideal.

Tell him that I (Shifty) sent you and he will make sure you are looked after. He can also wire it for you, if you are that way inclined, although the way most of us learn is to start doing things on our own.

Alternatively if you wanted to persist with the factory ECU, get a wiring diagram (someone above offered). Then you can simplify the loom by removing each of the wires, that are not relevant in your case (for example aircon wiring) and it will be half the size when you are finished.

You can also ditch the factory fusebox (especially as it is melted) and get a compact one from the wreckers from an 80's model car. Newer than the ratty old Datsun stuff but not enormous and overcomplicated like modern cars with ABS etc.

You will learn a lot by the time you are done!
