I am about to source a VDO gauge set (speedo, tach, oil pres, water temp etc) and I am not really sure about the comparability and how the speedo sender works in conjunction with my FJ gearbox?

Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
Are there specific senders I need, or do I need to modify the sender, or speedo cable????

Any electronic gearbox sender should be compatible with the Vdo electronic speedo. You can calibrate it based on pulses from the sender. Easy as pie if you have a GPS to start it off.

Ok cool. As long as I know It can be do e with relative ease I'm happy. I will be getting my whole loom run by an auto elec and I'll be getting them to wire up all my gauges including the speedo.

Thx for you help bro.

From memory it's the S13 SR20 sender you want, will plug straight into where the FJ sender was and just follow the instructions with the speedo to calibrate.......a good GPS should be accurate enough as they normally have speed indication if it's s decent model

So the electronic speedo like the VDO one I've ordered don't have a speedo cable but a sender that screws into the gearbox which is calibrated?
Am I correct in my thinking??

The electronic VDO speedo only comes with the speedo gauge unit and a generic wiring loom plug and some generic connectors. You need to get an S13 or S14 gearbox electronic sender. This bolts into your gearbox after you remove the old 'cable actuated' speedo sender unit in your existing gearbox. You just wire it up (following the instructions) and away you go.
The factory S14 had an electronic sender to the speedo. It has a wiring loom from the gearbox to the ECU.
