I have made some progress and have got the core out. With a soldering iron i loosened the 3 terminals which can be seen in the bottom of the 1st photo.

Now I am not sure if I have the right alternator. although i did get it of a 6 cylinder vn commodore at pick a part.

If you look at the photo below i have the back case of the vn alternator with the regulator and other stuff still in it and on the right i have my l series alternator back case.

The gap for the shaft is significantly wider on the l series to the vn.

Am I missing something or do I have the wrong alternator?

Its been a bit of a case of 2 steps forward 1 step back today.

I went down to the wreckers and got another vn alternator. It is a bosch unit. It looks dramatically different to the other one and most importantly the main spinning shaft is the right size.

However due to the way the bit that locates the shaft in the l series alternator back cover (see red circle) is raised and flares out it is still impossible to fit the internals of the vn alternator. (see blue circled) Basically the blue circle will not fit over the red circle.

Now I am wondering if there were different models of l series alternators and if i have the wrong one for the job.

Anyone have any insights?

Cheers

Sorry should have made that clear in the first post. Yep I'm trying to install the guts of the vn alternator to the l series casing to increase the amps to 85.

A number of people on ozdat have apparently done this, I just can't seem to figure out how.

I know on the 200B there is at least three types. And there not easily interchangeable either. But from memory the difference was down the regulators.

Ok,

I think I'll just head down to the auto elecs, unless anyone who has successfully done this can tell me which l series alt they used.

A VL or R31 (RB30) alt will bot up. Just change the pulleys over and off you go.

Thanks MYDATO
do you think the 70 amp vl alt will be enough for
- a microtech lt10s
- a vl fuel pump
- a lift pump
- a new stereo (no amp)
- Upgraded headlights (sealed beams converted to semi sealed with new relays 2x55w and 2x100w)
- 2 x 100w narva driving lights
- all the standed 180b electricals.

Also is there much work wiring in the vl alternator?

Cheers
Cam

Should be fine mate. There's a +VE terminal which goes to the starter noid/batt and a charge light terminal.

Thanks MYDATO

I've just been doing a little maths and I'm not sure 70 amps will cut it.

The 180b came with 3 different alternators ranging from 34 to 45 amps.

I am taking the bottom figure as a minimum requirement of the standard electrical system.

The vl fuel pump requires 6.5 amp to run so that's 40.5 amp gone.

I have added the following

a 4x50w stereo (using only 2 speakers) - 100w
2 spotlights - 200w
upgaded highbeams to 100w from 65w(?) - 70w
total - 370w
using the formula watt/volts = amps this adds 30.8 amp

Add that to the 40.5 and thats 71.3 amp required. This is not including the lift pump and the microtech which I couldn't get figures for.

This seems interesting. Its for a vl and is 100amp, but I vae noticed the mounting points are offset, not straight up and down like some of the other vl ones. I guess if it says vl though it should fit

I ended up getting a second hand vl one. I figured for $50 it was worth a try. I've got it on but I don't have it charging.

For wiring I have the main positive wire going to the big positive post. this wire goes straight to the bat positive via a fuse.

The original black wire on a spade clip is connected to the d- post

I have tried the other 2 wires which plug into the bushes both ways round,

but still only 12 volts at the battery
