So my L20B in my datto 1600 wagon has an aftermarket electronic ignition trigger setup replacing the points inside the distributor, looks like the Petronix kit. The original coil and ballast resistor was being used with this setup, and it ran fine, but now that it is no longer points and electronic ignition, am I right to think that I can remove the ballast resistor setup, I also have an MSD Blaster II coil to replace the stock Lucas one that is starting to leak oil. |

Measure the resistance of the coil between the pos and neg terminals. A reading of around 1.5 indicates a coil that requires a ballast and a reading of around 3 Ohms indicates a coil that can run on 12V without a resistor. |

The MSD Blaster II is designed to run without a coil, so if I fit that I'll remove the ballast resistor then, cheers. I'm just tidying up the wiring in the engine bay, and always like to get a second opinion on something I'm not 100% sure on just for peace of mind. So theoretically, the new stronger coil without a ballast resistor should improve spark output. I have access to my mates workshop full of tools, and a large box full of MSD leads and connectors, so I'll replace all the original plug leads too, they check out with resistance values but are old and mismatched |
