Post subject:  Electronic Ignition Options for L18 on Carbs

Good Evening All, I'm looking to get shot of my points ignition and replace them with an electronic equivalent. I've done a few searches and haven't been able to find anything definitive. So far the options are:

1. Replace points in existing distributor points with magnetic or hall effect sensor. (Not sure what brand to go with or what P/N I need)
2. Replace the complete distributor with electronic version from another model (Not sure what model to get it from or how easy/hard it is to complete the conversion)
3. Replace the complete distributor with an after market unit. (not sure of brands reputation etc)
4. Independently programmable distributor (a few brands out there, like 123 etc)
5. Megajolt Lite and Coil Pack. (This does away with the distributor all together and allows full programmable ignition)

I have electronic points fitted to my 1973 Jaguar XJ6 (powerspark brand) and that works really well. I also run MegaSquirt2 on my Renault, so fairly familiar with MegaJolt Lite too.

What out of the above have people tried/are using? How easy was it to conduct the conversion? How well does it work?

There is always the HEI setup that was fitted to the Series II Bluebird L20 engine.
Plug and play :)

Yeah I would definitely recommend the 910 Bluebird setup,

I was also shown that E15 is an option the other day

Barring a private sale you would have to go hunting at the Auto Wreckers.

Or you could use this: -

I would also recommend the above product but definitely the Bluebird / 910 (Australian) electronic ignition set up.

Still reasonable amount of L-series Bluebird around in the wrecking yards and classifieds.....Gumtree and eBay often have advertisers offering this set up.

You'll be amazed how different the car starts, idles, etc with electronic ignition....but I guess you know that!

Thanks for the replies. I will continue my search.

Just to be sure, will I just need the Dizzy or will I need any other module and/or the coil?

Get everything associated with the Ignition System: dist. ignition coil, wiring loom, and anything else I have forgotten.
The Vendor should make sure you have everything you need :)

I use a Pertronix Conversion and very happy with them For Hitachi Dizzys.
The Stealth Cobversion on the photo above look like a close clone to it.
Hoever I would not pay more than 75$ US for these units. as a Nissan unit would maybe be a better choice and one will not need a ballast resisitor and use a Later date EI coil.

The Pertronix(USA) and Stealth and Hotspark(China) Mallory Unilite all use the stock coil and ballast resisitor otherwise the modules might burn up.

We run the Bluebird dizzy in our L20B with dual Weber carbs. I bought it second hand took it to get reconditioned as per the engine builders requirements. Hasn't given us any troubles

I’ve got hold of a Bluebird Electronic Dizzy, but want to confirm the wiring.

- Do I need to bypass the ballast resistor?
- Do I need to run an ignition control module?
- My old points Dizzy has a single wire going to it, while the bluebird has two (control module?)?

Thanks.

1. The ballast resistor is redundant
2. The required Ignition Module is the black box on the distributor.
3. Wiring required is as follows: -

OK, I've only just got to fitting the 910 distributor and conducted the steps above (in Graeme's post), but I couldn't get in to start?

1. Bypass the ballast resistor - Black/White wire straight to POS on the coil together with Black/Blue and Black/Green
2. Pink wire from 910 dizzy module also to POS on the coil
3. Green wire from 910 dizzy module to NEG on the coil
4. HT Leads arranged in ACW from the top with #1 closest to radiator (front of car)

Initially I wired up the HT leads as per the old dizzy (#1 closest to thermostat housing) and then found the correct orientation here: http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=22200

The car would pop at certain orientations, nothing in others? Any other checks on suggestions? can I do any checks on the 910 dizzy I have? I tried with the vacuum connected and with it off and plugged at the manifold. Which way should I try for first start, or does it not matter?

I've put the old dizzy back on and it fired up straight away!?
