G'day all, I'm a newbie to Ozdat and apparently a bit of a moron!!
That outta the way, I have a 1980 200B wagon giving me charge issues. I've nailed it down the the voltage regulator but cannot find a replacement, any ideas?
That being said, I've noticed a couple of discussions upgrading the alternator to bigger amperage, in 1 post this was to a patrol alternator so my next question would be how do I eliminate the need for the voltage regulator externally?

The desired plan would be to swap the original externally regulated alternator with a later model internally regulated unit.
I did this on my B120 ute since a new regulator box was sooooo expensive!
Besides, I had a bunch of Nissan alternators sitting in my shed :)
There are some wiring changes required to achieve this but they are simple and straight forward.
DON"T go to a mega amp alternator unless you have fitted a shipload of audio gear for example.
Remember the wiring in the car, if stock, is NOT designed for extra current!

Graeme, much obliged!
Currently stock as a rock except the stereo head unit, but, my eldest just got his P's and I have succumbed to it being his daily!! Which I'm pretty sure will mean upgrades to the stereo at least!!
Any suggestions on which alternator I should be looking for? I'll be upgrading the wiring as I go too...

Most of the Nissan alternators are very similar.
You need to use one which has the same mount dimensions, pulley size and pulley spacing.
If you can post those dimensions I'll have a look on my shelf and see what I have.
According to the Nissan Service Manual, the Domestic Sedan had the Bosch KI-80 alternator with an inbuilt solid state VR

Had a quick look on eBay for a VR, TL1Z-82D: -

I figure by 1980 most alternators would be Internal with the alternator. At least the ones sold in USA were Hitachi japan units.
Unless you see a EXTernal Volt reg I would assume its a IR type(Internal Reg)

But maybe in Austraila they they ran EXTERNAL type. as some markets they still ran points in other countries years after elelctric in the USA. (I assume for emissions/ cost)

I run a cigarette lighter volt diaode meter and I usaually catch when the alter or reg goes bad before the idiot like goes on. YOu have to trust it. Waiting for the idiot light its usaully way to late to make it home
