Gday,

Just wondering if anyone knows the in's and out's of the 1600 fuel gauge sysytem?

For some reason mine isnt working at all. The wiring harness is original for that part of the car and it used to work in the car it came from so im not sure?

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Blayne

well, the way it works is....

you get 12V postive to your dash, it goes into a voltage regulator, then from there to the Fuel Gauge.....the negative from the fuel gauge runs all the way to your boot, to the fuel level sensor, where it earths out with a varying resistance.
your temp gauge works in the same way.

check all your connections.
check that the wire from the level sender has coninuity to the dash.
check that you have 12V coming into the dash

if they are there, then its most likely that the voltage regulator is shot....as these arent that great ( a lot of people have probs with the gauge fluctuating, which is a sympton of a dying voltage reg )

yeh there is a single yellow wire that runs to the boot and clips onto the terminal on the tank(ie: the furl level sensor mouning on outside of the tank)

yeh it has continuity to the dash, juts chcked with the multimeter.

and there is 12v all over the dash.

where is the voltage regulator you speak of?

cheers,
Blayne

is there an autometer gauge that will work with this setup?

all my other gauges are autometer

if you look at the back of the dash, youll see a panel in the centre you can unscrew.....pull that out, and it will have the Temp and Fuel gauges attatched to it.

the Voltage regulator is also mounted on that panel.

I cant see why a aftermarket gauge wouldnt work.
youd just use the yellow wire only....plus your normal 12V and earth, and lights.
if you were to go aftermarket gauges, ignore the voltage regulator

the voltage regulator thermal compensation block is a aluminum can rectangle canistor on the back of the dash assembly(disconnet the speedo cable and the connector)
The canister is soldered down to the board. ck and ohm for hairline crack in the circut board.

If you have proplems with the Volt reg you might also have proplem with your TEMP gauge also. If not then look more at the sender.

My beater 510- it reads FULL all the time. Never did fix it.I assume its the sender since I changed ti another Dash with a trip meter now so I dont run out of gas.

As for the aftermarket gauge I assume you have to scale it to read correctly. Know your ohm reading at full and emply.

i have been checking everything and found that if you tap the gauge after you turn the ignition on, the gauge works just fine.

do you think this could be the voltage regulator having bad contact, and then making contact when i tap the gauge/dash?

i will check the impedance with the multimeter if its possible?

yeah sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

the gauge and the regulator have small wire windings, I guess they could break pretty easily.

if so, might be easier to get another 1600 dash, or go aftermarket

Anyone know what the range (in ohms) of the 1600 fuel tank is?
I'd measure it, but have to fill up my fuel tank (and then empty it!)

I think it's 90ohms empty and 0 ohms full, but can someone confirm this. I am really not sure.

Does anyone know what the output voltage of the regulator is? I am guessing 12 or 9V.

Mine has died and i want to replace it with an electronic variety.

it would be weird to regulate 12 volts to 12 volts so id say something less.
You should be able to measure this easily with a multimeter...

A charged battery is about 12.5V. When the car is running it will be around 13.5-14V.

Yea I could measure it if the regulator wasnt stuffed

Wanna measure yours for me?

Chris,

What do you need measured? Someone to measure the factory fuel sender voltage (ie positive on the fuel tank side, and negative to earth?)

I can do that...

Hey mate, yea if you could disconnect the sender wire from the tank and measure the voltage there that would be cool

Mine measures 12V with ignition and 13.8V with engine running. Fuel and temp gauges both read full scale the whole time.

OK mate.
I'll write myself a note and do it for you.
When do you need it by?
