Gday all,

I am wanting to get into some sprints and short circut racing and decided that before I start, I want to fit a rollcage and harnesses to my car.

Just a few questions;
  • how much should I expect to pay for a 4-point cage?

where can I get one from/made? (in SE Qld)

do I need a mod plate from an engineer?

am I able to fit harnesses but also still use the existing seatbelts?
And any other info that you think I should know before venturing into this!

Thanks heaps and i look forward to your replies. :)

Depends on if it's bolt in or weld in. The cage in my race car cost me $1200 - so a basic 4 point would be maybe $600? Bolt in may be cheaper. Try contacting Bond --> http://www.bondrollbars.com/IndexContacts.htm

Not sure. Sorry. :(

Depends on the legalities of QLD as to whether you can run one in the car at the same time. If not, simply get a removeable harness which you can clip into the car when you want to compete. They're normally a bit more expensive, but it's a work-around.

For makes and models, check out Demon Tweeks -->http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue ... &Brand=all

Revolution, Race and Rally, etc can supply you with most of the products you'll find on this site.[/b]

CA18 datto,
Heres some pics of mine and my brothers 1600 rollcages.

My Bro's.

Both where done by Fabraications in Melb. Mine cost $4k and my bro's was $1200. Both came with engineers certificates covering Cams and FIA certification. Got some cheaper quotes but the workmanship was not up to scracth and a dodgy cage can kill you. Should give you an idea of what you have to pay for quality work.

Thanks for your replies guys. :D

Tim I emailed that Bond roll bars place about a cage, still waiting to hear back. I will have to contact the DOT and see whats legal re harnesses in Qld, but the clip out ones sound good at this stage - less messy than keeping them in all the time.

Turbo 510 - wow thats some extensive roll-caging!! Yours especially but your brothers is pretty nice too. I'm after something a little simpler though, just a bolt-in 4 point so I can still carry passengers in the back if need be, its still a daily driver after all! ;) Just a wild guess but I'd say your cars are going to be used as race cars!?

Well most of the time they will be driven in competition events but both of them are still fully road registered and will probably be taken out for a cruise at least once a fortnight. The reason track/bitumen rallies will be the main use is that you can't give a turbo datto a squirt on the street and expect to keep your licence.
btw, you can not legally carry rear seat passengers in any 1600 with any type of rollcage or harnesses as the main hoop needs to be set back at the front edge of the rear seat to clear the front seats. It is classified as an obstruction to rear seat passengers as they can not get out quickly enough in the case of an accident. When I installed the harnesses before I had the rollcage I was required to register my Datto as a 2 seater.

Charlotte,

Check this one out with your DOT too. In the ACT in the past (not sure about now) you couldn't carry passengers in the back of the car if you had a cage - something about restricting entry and exit of the vehicle/potential of injury in an accident. This may have changed for us as I've seen a few cars around with a back seat still in them........

Hi Jake

So you got Rai to do your cage ay.... he does very nice work... I also looked at the workmanship of some other cage places and decided that Rai's was by FAR the best...

What did you get it made from? That special chrome Mag stuff he does??

James,
Yeah, it's a chrome manganese (sp?) cage. Best value for money option. Rai's work is definately awesome, I have nothing but praise for his workmanship and his professional approach. Hopefully I will never have to use it :)
He was very happy with the way my cage came out, almost as happy as I was in fact. If you check the pics on his Photo's page you will see two pics of my car. Have to take it back down as soon as it is finished and show it to him.
