I've done a bit of stuff for the Datsun lately :). After a bit of a long break, I've just been driving it around for the most part haha.

Also I went to see the place that I usually get engine work done to get the head skimmed and they have shut down :(. Does anyone have any recommendations for places around newcastle to skim the head, do the valve seats and maybe regrind my cam?
Hey Jarich,

Jack Jones Engine Reconditioning in East Lambton, 24 Wyong Road.

Phone: 4956 1339

Jack works by him self, he quoted me the other day $165ish for a Datsun L4 head service + $110 for a pressure test. head service is acid clean, head surface, valves re cut. Not sure if he grinds cams tho.. never asked him.

He has to be one of the top machinist in Newi, 30+ years in Engine Reco'ing, standard of work and quality is awesome. I get all my work done by him, he may be a little on the exxy side but at least he's spot on.

You can tell him a young fella named Steve with the Datto sent you.

I spent half a day with him just talking and helping him out and seeing what its all like, and i realised how padantic he is with customers jobs. Wouldn't bore a block if it wasn't 100% spot on to the thou'.

Anyway, only person i can mention personally.

Top work on the SU's.

Cheers,
Stephen.

Thanks champ, i'll give him a ring or something. If i'm just after the head skimmed and the valves it should be a bit cheaper than the full shebang so the price isn't bad I reckon :).

Talked to the bloke today, $165 it is :).
I'll take the head there next week i reckon. I've got my SU's pretty much all back together, all cleaned out and nice. Made some new gaskets for them and all that. Just got to paint he heatshield and the linkages and we'll be set.
Starting work on the 2" exhaust tomorrow.
If i get a moment i'll throw in the lowered front springs (don't have any rears yet) and the front XR4s.

Took the old exhaust, carby and inlet manifold off today (you pretty much have to take all of them off at the same time since it's not a crossflow engine.
I've got the head going in to get the valves recut and the face skimmed next week so i'll not be putting any of the original carby etc back on.
The SU's are 99% done, heatshield is painted and carbs are together, just got to clean the linkage and put the barbs etc back into the inlet manifold. can't mock it up though, the crankcase breather on the L20B hits the heatshield so i'll see where it usually goes on an L18 or L16.
Got some urethane bushes for the front suspension and i've got the front lowered springs so i'll put them in while it's up on stands too. I'd like to paint the engine bay but not sure if i'll have time for that. I'll certainly be giving it a good clean under there though!
I might need to get some new shocks for the front too, they appear to be leaking. I'll pull the struts out and give them a bit of a clean and probably change the inserts when i put the new springs on.
Old exhaust...

And I've done a bit more work, pulled all the front suspension out to do it all in urethane with new ball joints and tie rod ends :).

Crusty worn out ball joint

The control arm, the inner bush isn't bad but it's getting replaced

Some of the other bushes that will be replaced

The spring is off, got lowered springs for the front. The shocks seem to be in decent nick so they'll stay for now :).

I'd happily take it to drift days on tight tracks with an LSD. Of course a Subaru clutch pack LSD from a Leone etc isn't going to be easy to get hold of haha.
Ah well, 190rwkw Silvia will have to do (although I've got to do the clutch in that before the next drift day :()....
