Yeah, that's what I heard also. You have to rough up the surface of POR15 if you leave it to get the gloss off before over-painting. Such a pain.
This stuff mate, so far has been awesome and was the best one recommended to me. Its sprayed nice from the gun on 1 coat (and I was using a small tip, should use about 1.8 to get the stuff on the job). But despite this I've got really good coverage, i'm starting to think that I might not do a second coat - Partly because i'll be priming again using high fill later. But i'll see what I feel like in the morning.
It is a bit of a pain to clean up but normal thinners seem to work alright. I didn't get heaps of over-spay, but i'm just going to paint over it later I think, so i'm not too concerned.

Will let you know how it sands, but so far i'm impressed with it. I'm going to high fill using a U-pol primer later after I detail it because this one I was told wasn't all that heavy. Its a high fill primer, but doesn't have heaps of build to it. But its enough to cover scratches etc, and the TDS says that you can use it as a surfacer also, so with a bigger tip on the gun it should be pretty versatile. The main reason I used it was because it was the best thing for me to prime bare metal with to prevent rust further. As its zinc based and shouldn't be all that porous being epoxy. So i'll bog on top of that, then rub it back. And any other chips and scratch marks will be filled later.

I've put seam sealer on the engine bay. I haven't painted it yet. But to me it looks pretty ugly. What do you think? Should I keep it or remove it?
I guess my main concern is that it looks a little rough and isn't exactly uniform. Its got a few pits over it where i smoothed it over and its thicker in some spots than others. This could be that i'm being pedantic. But i'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to presentation.

Please ignore the body filler and the touch up paint.

I've rubbed the seam sealer off the high side of the panel overlap to try and show a bit more metal and make it look a little better. Opinions? Should i just try and clean it up and make it a little more uniform, and leave it, or should I just get rid of it?

Keep it, but just give it a light sand. By the time you paint over it, you wont even notice it.

You'd think that i'd find some sort of repair work on this car that was done PROPERLY so I didn't need to continually fix it up and spend hours doing it. Ahh well... (end of bitch session)

So my complaint comes from the fact that, I was motivated enough to start stripping paint off my guards ready for primer. Started paint stripping them last night, and layer after layer of paint started to remove itself, then high fill, then more paint, then body filler, and more body filler. So this morning I had enough and took to it with the wire wheel on the grinder, and discovered another textbook panel beating repair job. Awesome.
Attachment:
File comment: That was the rust that extended to almost half way up the guard.

DSC04365.jpg [ 109.36 KiB | Viewed 1955 times ]
That was then cut out sort of as square as i could get it.
Then the next step was to separate the outter skin, from the inner bracing.
Attachment:
File comment: Pretty self explanatory.
[ attachment ]
DSC04366.jpg [ 184.84 KiB | Viewed 1955 times ]
Then the had to cut away the inner part that was rusted out. And a new piece was bent into shape and fitted and welded in.

The next section was bent up to follow the pattern of the sills. Same angles, better than the current guard was I think. Also treated to a heavy coat of cold gal primer.

Then the next straight section was made, this was cut into shape, then had the end folded over so it would look factory. Being 1.1mm gal, it was a little harder to work with, but still came out pretty much dead on. This was then welded into place. The bottom section was also folded over once the top section was in, so to maintain perfect gap. Which I was able to achieve. I also added a bottom section which was rusting out also, and was temped to reinforce the hole that the guard bolt goes onto. But it looked ok, so will assess it later.

I've coated it all in cold Gal because the day just got away from me. I've ground the welds down compared to that pic. And unfortunately i'm not going to be able to escape the fact that i'm going to have to use a bit of body filler to smooth this one out (which i'm relatively pissed off about - I hate body filler). However... Its better than it was before.

Update.

On Thursday my datsun sent me to Hospital. I spent 7 hours waiting in fast track for a surgeon to come and cut a bit of metal out of my arm...

I was making good progress with the wire wheel on the angle grinder, when one of clusters of wound metal decided to shoot itself out at me. I didn't feel it go in, and its not like it hasn't happened before. But this one shot it into my forearm where I couldn't see it. Just when I had finished grinding, I was brushing the dirt off me when I felt something hard on my arm. That was too late and by that stage I had pushed it straight under my skin into my arm.
Attachment:
File comment: The middle S is the one that went into my arm. It was about 30mm long. And went about 1cm under the skin. The other pics are a suture and a needle tip suck into my skin to act as markers to find it.

Pretty cool I think. But now its a setback. Ahh well. These things happen.

Yeah, I was wearing safety glasses. One thing I'd protect most would be my eyes. I'd be screwed if I went blind. And after what happened to dad not long ago with his eye, I'm being really careful with mine.

I know!!! Normally they just stick in and you can just pull them out. Its happened to me numerous times before. But its only because I took my jumper off and it went into the softer part of the skin on my forearm that I didn't see it and I was covered in dirt. I had just finished and was about to go have lunch so I brushed the dirt off me, then realised that the sharp barb that I must have felt, I pushed what little was protruding out of my arm up under my skin. I wasn't impressed. But the x-ray is pretty cool if you ask me.

Thanks about the guard. It came up alright. Its back to bare metal, I need to prime it soon, just haven't had time.

Yea those wire wheels can be pretty dangerous. I had one piece fly right through my cheek and out the other side, just under the safety glasses I was wearing. Always pays to have the right safety gear, I should have been wearing a face guard and not just safety glasses.

Looks like your car is coming along nicely anyhow, it's always satisfying to de-butcherise a car and make it something better.

As many loose panels as i could in primer. I need to source a new rear door, or do some open heart surgery because of the rust near the top where the rear quarter window sits. Other than that, its finally starting to come along nicely.

A few more updates. I've been working quite a bit lately and haven't had time to do all that i've wanted on the car. But in the mean time, I have been removing rust, cleaning, wire wheeling doing all that stuff to fix all the minor things and little details that I don't want to overlook.

The holes for the speakers were trimmed up and bent around also for appearance and so you don't cut your hand on the sharp knives pointing down.

Today was spend applying body filler to primed metal. Sanding it back, applying icing. Doing that in engine bay. Still not finished. Quite time consuming, but worth it in the end to make it look smooth as I think!

Ok, for the past few days, being in my carport while its been raining out side (has proved cumbersome because its limited my movements and what I can do) I have managed to block out most of the doors and guards, and front valance and boot lid (Although guards still need some touch ups).
Then today it was mostly fine until later this afternoon where it rained a tad, I managed to catch a break in the weather to spray the doors.
Will have to do the guards next week.

Not too much wrong with that one. Just a few touch ups.

This was the worst door. Had been hit previously, and nocked out with what must have been a nail punch on the inside, I ended up having to smooth over the entire door. I'll see how it goes, may consider buying a new one.

My door slipped off the stand it was resting on and bumped a dent from the inside of the skin. Fell through the center door panel. Serves me right resting it on a bar stool for a frame. Ahh well, more body work for me, didn't get out of it that easy.
