Anth.... I remember at the Classic Jap day you were telling about your rear suspension set up.
I think you said you currently have T3 coilover setup, but wanted to change to one of Baz's Datsport packages.
I know how good the Datsport stuff is, but is there something wrong with your T3 gear?

I have the older Troy Ermish v1 rear coilovers, he makes a much nicer version now. My only gripe with them is that they make a bit of noise over bumps, but I can't even hear it any more. Having height adjustability is great, as I've changed the ride height a few times over the years in a matter of minutes. Still, I would like to change to Baz's setup in the future for a few reasons; it's a proven package, I've seen/felt first hand just how well they perform (in the 2-door above), and they retain the factory separate shock/spring setup. I've never heard of a shock mount breaking from the added stress of a coilover but something in the back of my mind still tells me it's not right. Don't forget you can adjust the ride height with normal springs just by adding/removing the rubber isolator that sits on top of the spring (and replacing it by sleeving the top coil with some hose).

I think Baz has tested the T3 rear coilovers and if I remember correctly he said they were a bit bouncy?

A number of rear coil over setups use a KYB AGX shock. These are excellent shock absorbers.
Where the problem lies is what type of shock is used.
Most US kits use an AGX shock from a Chev Camero.

The Camero has a leaf spring rear suspension.

A typical shock for a leaf spring has less resistance on compression than a coil spring shock.
This is due to the inbuilt damping/resistance of the sliding action of the leafs in a leaf spring.
This is visible as wear on the spring segments of a leaf spring.

A coil spring does not have this resistance.
Typically a coil spring shock has more resistance on compression than a leaf spring shock.

Many experienced 510/1600 tuners have found that a 50/50 rate rear shock ( or as close to this as you can get)
is well suited for a 510/1600.
The increased compression rate controls squat, absorbs bumps & reduces body roll.
So leaf type shocks are not suited to our cars.

Testing a set of US coil over rears we found that indeed they were leaf spring rear shocks.
We also checked the part# to confirm they were camero rear shocks.
Adjusting the shock to get a good compression rate resulted in getting jack down.

Jack down is when the rebound rate is too firm. A succession of bumps will not allow the shock time to recover.
The results in the suspension getting progressively lower & in extreme cases the suspension will bottom out.

Now some are quite happy to use these type of shocks, however if you want the best balance of ride & handling
go for a close to 50/50 rear shock.

Did a skid pan day on Saturday, it was heaps of fun. Chris tagged along (last two pics), but we were both battling understeer, him more so than me. We're both hoping to hit up Trackside Tyres soon for new alignments, since a few people have highly recommended them. Pretty keen to try a hillclimb next, but I desperately need to fit my seats before trying any more forms of motorsport (I've said that before though!)

Apart from tyre pressure if understeering is a problem then increase the rear toe in.
It is amazing what an extra 1mm of additional toe can do.
At the track you can increase the rear toe.
Just slacken off the outer pivot bolt & screw in the adjuster bolt half a turn both sides.
Repeat until car is neutral.
