did you continue using that citrus stuff??

I havent got around to making that firewall drain.
i took the old one off and found a bit of rust, so glad i did end up
checking that.

Im off to qld for 2 weeks tomorrow so it looks like you will be getting
even further ahead of me. :cheers

Hi All,

Update from last night.

Big thanks to Nik for the assistance with welding and all things Datsun :) Here are some pics of the nights effort! Some great welds in there!

Jono, I used a combination of Citrus Solvent and elbow grease :? I'm so happy that job is complete! For the really tricky areas it was just time more than anything.

So now there is a plan of attack for the rest of the seam welding so will continue tomorrow, no car work today :)

Hi All,

Some more pics from today's welding. Also picked up the engine/box. S14DET.

Getting the engine off the trailer and onto the stand without a hoist wasn't an easy process :) I have removed the AC and the PS pump and will start to clean it up a bit when I get sick of welding...

Hi All,

Small update, not much work as I have been sick for a week.....

Few hours on Sunday with the following:

Received the panels back from the blasters, some mixed feelings here, ended up being charged double what I was quoted, won't name the business name however not sure the work warranted the price hike but what can you do! Job seems good but it was all a big awkward. hmmm Anyway got them back and they are being sent off for etch primer now.

Engineer coming over tomorrow to kick things off officially and get some tips here and there :)

Welded up some big rust holes in the boot lid and is now off for etch primer. The corner was pretty much gone so there is a lot of weld in there but its not so bad, not much warping and all fits pretty snug.

What are everyone's thoughts on the turbo? Is this standard for the S14 blacktop?

Also check out the head gasket. What is this metal piece coming out of the head gasket? Are these standard (Guess not) however anyone with an opinion on it?

Also a shout out to Grand Auto Wreckers in SA.

Purchased the S14DET package from them a few months ago and stored it at a mates factory. Brought the engine home (All wrapped up) weekend before last and turns out the starter motor was missing. Called up Anthony and within about 2 days it was on the door step no questions asked, great service!!

Hi All,

Update from this weekend, lots of work however doesn't really look like much!

Replaced the drain in the firewall from the windscreen wipers. For this I decided to go a slightly different path :), instead of using new steel I decided to chop up some bits of the back half of the datto I brought and use that for it :) So ended up cutting out just under the rear window which was perfect size for the drain replacement panel. Anyway still need to grind back the welds a bit but it's essentially done. All the curves are in the right places.... I have decided I'm not going to cover it up. With the SR going in I guess the additional clearance here might not be the worst thing in the world. Oh and I just replaced the top half of it, the bottom was fine.

Also fixed part of the rear parcel shelf, previous owner had gone to town drilling out the bolts and making a few additional holes here and there. I have done part of it and will finish the other side next weekend. Will also look at welding in some RHS underneath for a harness mount. Will need to think about that one some more.

Fixed the other hole in the engine bay from the intercooler piping. This one was much trickier than it looks, I had to get the shape just right because it came up the wheel arch as well. I actually made it out of 4 pieces in the end, I'm sure a pro would have knocked it out in 10 mins and 1 piece of steel :) Anyway I got there in the end.

Also did some work on the right hand front guard, I will take it to the panel beater tomorrow however I really think I need to replace the bottom sections in the guards. I see you can get them from rare spares. Anyone had any experience with them?

Also a tonne more seam welding. That's a big task in itself, just time consuming, wire brush, scrape, weld, rinse & repeat :)

All in all a good weekends work, very time consuming and fiddley to get right but I'm happy with the results.

Purchased the s/h maddat fitting kit that was on sale here so will have that on Wednesday, will post some pics once I get it :)

All feedback welcome.....BTW previous post anyone had feedback on the head gasket?

Small update, nothing exciting other than stopping count after filling 50+ holes in the engine bay. Still have about another 15 or so to weld up.

Mad Dat SR20 fitting kit came in. Did a bit more rust work, started cutting out some rust around the air vents. Also replaced the other speaker hole in the parcel shelf. Only had 2.5 hours last weekend so not much progress at all. This weekend will fill (Weld) another 80+ holes in various locations around the car....boring but needs to happen :)

Thanks mate, yeah getting there. I really wish I had more time, work getting in the way of my Datsun...

I have some rust at the front bumper bar mount that I'm not sure how to attack, OK off my butt and took some pcis. If anyone has any ideas would be great?

Basically I had cut out a small bubbled section to reveal the plate behind is gone. You can see on the other side it's all bubbled up as well.

It seems to be the middle piece of steel that's stuffed.

I had the same issue of 1 side of my 1600. I kept un picking stuff until I found no more rot. I then got my sheety mate to bend up new sheet and welded it in. Try to keep the old material intact while removing it as a template. Makes life alot easier.

Every time I seem closer to getting away from the engine bay it drags me back. I guess i knew the answer just AHHHH RUST :roll:

They joys of the Datto, it will be worth it in the end :) OH and haven't event tackled the rear quarters yet LOL

Hi All,

Bit of work this weekend, Sat I replaced a big section under the radiator support between the factory bolt holes. Came up OK, thanks to the grinding tips from Nik! Also filled 4 (Large) holes and ground it all back.

Then on the front of it, welded up some smallish holes, then cut out the complete rusted lower section. Will also need to cut out the section on the right but am wondering, should I replace the section on the right and then leave the cut out in the middle for the garnet blaster to get the gun in there?

I haven't welded it up as I need to get some new steel. Think I have found a place opposite Bunnings in Bayswater, plan to check out tomorrow.

For those of you wondering, has he been exaggerating on the number of holes been drilled in the car by past owner/s?, a few pics of the dash are an example. 23 in total with some small bit hacked out of the back! This had nothing on the engine bay though :) Was actually a bit time consuming welding it all up as welds had to be tidied up on both sides. Will go off for blasting tomorrow.

Welded up 18 holes in the drivers kick panel and ground back. Also, stripped paint from the bonnet and will get the frame blasted this week as well. No point in posting pics on that! Cleaned up some parts and as they are being tidied up they are wrapped in bubble wrap and stored away :)

Not super exciting however progress nonetheless

Great work trent.

Don't forget to mark out (photo?) the areas of rust which need to be sandblasted before you bead blast.
Hopefully the blaster will follow your instructions and sand blast all the areas before bead blasting everything and etch priming the whole lot saving you HEAPS of time later.
