Cool thanks Jono!

I will SMS you tomorrow if I'm going ahead with it and will let you know :) I have the A frame built into the garage so will see what I can do. Really wanted the rad done today but what can you do!

Cheers,

Trent

You could drill all the holes out slightly larger? It doesn't look like much.

option 2 or option3.

back off the other bolts a little too, then nip them all up in sequence.

MadDats Jig might be a little out of whack or it distorted when cooling from welding.

Thanks for the tips guys.

The solution in the end was to put a jack in the middle and bend it out.

I had tried to put just one thread in but still couldn’t get the other side started. Drilling was an option but really didnt want to do it. In the end the jack worked a treat! perfect fit.

A test after welding/powder coating in the jig would be a good QA measure. Email support was great.

Rest of the day didn’t pan out so well:

- New mounts made for the radiator. Fits perfectly now.
- Car down to a single jack stand thanks to Jono and another mate
- Missing the gearbox rubber mount! Damn it. Will need to either keep looking or find another
- Rubber engine mounts I had for the old engine are stuffed, will need to buy some new ones but they will do for a test fit
- Didn’t have a strap for the engine to get it up on the block/tackle so in the end all ideas failed and the engine is sitting in front of the car.
- Tomorrow will see if I can do anything to get it sorted out.
- Ordered the SR engine water outlet from Datsport and the trans tunnel cover. Expect them to come in tomorrow

Cheers,

Trent

Hi All,

Well the engine is finally in!

It started off as a disaster but luckily we recovered and all was OK (not going to post the happenings :S) but anyway it’s in!

Very happy with the clearances on the rad and the crank. About 50mm spare with the pulley on. Will put the gearbox in on Monday, the Datsport stuff arrived so all good to go with the trans tunnel cover.

There isn’t a lot of tension on the ropes, it’s just a safety measure!

Anyway check out the pics and have a good Xmas everyone!

Cheers,

Trent

Small update, nothing exciting other than stopping count after filling 50+ holes in the engine bay. Still have about another 15 or so to weld up.

Mad Dat SR20 fitting kit came in. Did a bit more rust work, started cutting out some rust around the air vents. Also replaced the other speaker hole in the parcel shelf. Only had 2.5 hours last weekend so not much progress at all. This weekend will fill (Weld) another 80+ holes in various locations around the car....boring but needs to happen :)
Reminds me of when I built my car. Looks great! If you are intersted, I folded some wire into the fold between the firewall and engine bay and welded it in. I've seen a few let go in this place.

Keep up the good work!

Hi Mate,

Thanks :D

I'm having trouble visualising "I folded some wire into the fold between the firewall and engine bay". Can you PM me a pic?

Cheers,

Trent

Hi All,

Update from today, not a whole lot (only 2 hours), Jono dropped off the missing gearbox mount, will fit the gearbox tomorrow if all goes to plan.

Modified the rear calliper brackets, came up quite well, light coat of primer and paint “in the paint booth ;)” and if all OK after the test fitting they will be blasted and powder coated.

Stay tuned for more tomorrow.

Cheers,

Trent

Hi All,

Gearbox “was” in but it was a complete non event. I thought it would take some time and some sort of achievement but reality, was 15 mins :)

Everything is lining up really well. Lots of room for the radiator etc..

So you can see that I have been working on the gearbox hole. I have attached an old pic from the previous owner/s hack job, I should have taken a pic from the top but usual story, 28 holes, tears in the metal. Anyway all fixed up and nice lip on it now at the top and bottom. Expanded to fit the SR. Will give it a quick splash with primer just until it’s blasted next week.

Datsport cover will be fitted tomorrow, with 40deg today welding isn’t much fun.

I have found it incredibly frustrating to have all my tools in one big box and have to dig through them each time I go out to the datto. So spent the afternoon building a peg board above my workbench. Will get the tools on it tomorrow :) Should be much easier now.

All feedback welcome.

Happy New Year to all.

Cheers,

Trent

Hi Guys,

It's great to have all the tools in a nice easy to reach place rather than the old black tub. Was about $40 at Bunning’s in bits to set it all up with hooks. I'm all about efficiency :D

Thanks for the offer Jono but it's all sorted. If all goes to plan (confirming tomorrow) the car is in next week for the blasters.

So not really much to update. Last weekend working on the house, so no Datto, however tonight fitted the datsport gearbox cover with self tappers. Once blasted and etch primed I will weld it in.

This weekend I have one more piece of rust to cut out in the sill so will put the car back on the rotisserie...ahhh also weld up a hole they had cut for a radio antenna, forgot about that one.

Also MadDat have sorted me out on the gearbox Xmember. Great support I have to say "Thanks Tam" :) Will have a new one once the car is back from blasting and etch primer.

Cheers,

Trent

Hi All,

It’s been a while since an update.

No a whole lot going on, xmas has been crazy!

I have started working on one of the sill panels yesterday, pics below. So basically it was all smashed in here, throw in a splash of rust and you have a nice mix of repair work.

So I have had to do this in multiple stages, mainly because of my lack of skill in this space. First part was to cut out the top part where the dogleg and sill xover. Assess the damage and then I have replaced the main part of the sill. Next will be to cut out the other part of the dog leg and replace that bit. The metal is super thin and super rusty so it’s a lot of messing about. I need a clear head for this bit :D I havent used filler, just ground back and then a thin coat of paint. No point on working on the finish until the body is blasted.

30th of this month the car is going in for blasting and etch priming. While it’s gone I’ll probably start to work on cleaning up the engine, painting some brackets and maybe tackle the heater assembly....

Cheers,

Trent

Good job. Its not hard to do sills mate, just take your time with it.
I wish i had the cash for sand blasting, would have made work so much easier. Keep the progress pics coming!
