So rigged up the radiator and thermostat, but while filling I could see fluid coming out from one of the thermostat housing studs.

In the frenzy to tighten it I broke one  Bought an ezy out kit, arrived today so will have go at that this weekend. Already have replacement stud, might need to glue them in as I have a feeling the coolant was coming up through the thread rather than a gap in the gasket.

Attempted to get the engine going again now we had time. Re-timed the whole thing to make sure compression stroke etc, had jerry can rigged up, carby was fuel pump working but fuel not getting into the bowl of the carby. Tried start you bastard directly but engine still misfired, now looking at rebuilding the carby off the E1 engine that came in the sedan because they are simple.

I started looking at brakes, original plan was to run drums, but that may be more effort than it would be to upgrade to front discs. Was hoping sp311 roadster stuff would work, but apparently different. Hoping an upgrade the guys use on the Datsun 1000's will work on the 411 (corolla girlock calipers, r31 rear caliper mount, R31 rear disc, commodore caliper mount combined with girlock caliper).

I have half the parts so will mock it up on the sedan first, hoping it fits under a 13 inch steelie.

Nice work Martin.

Any progress on the 510 also?

Hey Tim

Nothing yet, trying to stay focused on this thing until it drives, but once I'm back into it I'll put a build thread up here.

My Neighbour got a bloke to rebuild the carby off the E1 with parts he had in stock. Did that, had to use the who E1 inlet & exhaust manifold.

Broke the exhaust manifold while trying to remove the broken stud, got it welded (fun job on 50 year old rusted cast metal), installed new exhaust studs.

Fitted up new carby & manifolds, car still won't start. Gave up on that for the moment and have moved to brakes.

Bought R31 caliper brackets, removed spindle from parts sedan, stripped off Drum brake gear, mocked up R31 caliper bracket. Took to a R31 rear disc with a grinder to make it fit over the P410 hub for mocking.

R31 brackets required some material to be removed from the sides to sit flat, welded up holes on the brackets as they don't line up. Redrilled them to suit using the drum backing plate bolt guide.

Bought some Stanza girlock calipers in the hope they would work in place of the corolla calipers but they are a wider spacing, doh. So went for commodore rear calipers instead due to price and availability ($70 a pair vs $140+ for corolla).

Ordered a dual piston master cylinder based off information on datsun1200.com. Found out the master I received is for a car with a booster, so now need to make new push rod for the master.

The saga continues, some pics below

Pushrods are different, this is the non boosted one

Removed the circlip and washer to fit the non boosted push rod

Fitted it, but confident it won't work, so now will remove and make a whole new one to suit (will reuse clevis)

Next tasks

- complete mockup of brakes, confirm it will actually work. If it does, buy new R31 rear rotors. Also will most likely require new longer wheel studs, rear R31 wheels studs are hopefully same diameter.
- Buy bundy tube and brake nuts and start making brake lines.
- Make push rod.
- Figure out what rear drums to use, or rebuild existing.
- Pull out fuel tank and see if there is more metal than rust in it.
- Attempt to repair the column shift linkage bushes that are flogged out, will see if I can buy some urethane to lathe down.
- Fix radiator & broken stud on thermostat housing.
- Then dump on my mechanics doorstep for him to work out why it doesn't run.

*NO SPELL CHECK OR PROOF READING DONE

Still chipping away.

Completed the modified caliper brackets, had to make some 22.5mm spacers out of rod with a hole through it. Clamped and tack welded just to make mounting easier.

Ordered a new set of rear R31 skyline rotors (DBA616) from ebay, now just need to get the second hub off my 410 parts sedan then I'll get the hub face machined so the R31 rotor slips over.

Then it will be onto brake lines and push rod for the brakes. I have a length of stainless rod, so I just need to work out rod length then tap a thread to suit the cleavis. Also need some bundy tube and corresponding nuts to make new lines for the front.

Hopefully my measurements are correct and the brakes line up, see how we go.

The list is getting smaller, this year is definitely the year, even if i have to pay someone to complete it, it's happening.

Soooo, on the weekend, my neighbour came over and we had another look at the wagon.

Adjusted points, removed dizzy and dizzy shaft, put engine on compression stroke and reinstalled the dizzy shaft to confirm we had it the right way around (as it was still backfiring through carby).

[ img ]

Found a different old coil and put that in as we found it had a heaps better spark. Replaced a few spade terminals that had seen better days, run a jerry can for fuel again and then...

Once the carby had a chance to run and get the crap through it, it settled down and idled perfectly. The engine actually sounds healthy.

Just caught up on all the January updates.

Top work man, different ball game to playing with 510's with all the tried and tested options out there to choose from.

Look forward to seeing this thing on the road.

Thanks guys, this car is the thorn in my side as I hate having uncompleted projects/work.

I need to get myself a big piece of cardboard, a black marker and start making a short list like the guys on roadkill

The drive out of the driveway still seems a long long way away, but the chipping will continue!

Good to see somebody else is taking on a WP411 project!

I (finally) picked up one a few weeks back, can't wait to get stuck into it when I return from holidays in a couple of weeks time. I've got a similar situation to you - mine's a 1966 411 but it still has mostly 410 spec trim. That's a good thing to me, I much prefer the concave grille and early tail light lenses to be honest.

Very interested to see how your front brake setup turns out. This is one of the first jobs I plan on completing, before I move on to the suspension components. I've got the original J13 in mine at the moment, but I've also picked up a J16 which I would like to put in there later on down the track, so long as I can get the 3sp column shift to fit.

They aren't the easiest cars to find parts for but it seems that when there's a will, there's a way. Some of the window rubbers (such as the one around the front side triangle window) and the badges are probably the biggest headaches I can foresee on the horizon.

Look forward to seeing your updates.

Ryan

P.S. Have you heard of Auto Shiro? They specialise in early Datsun restorations over in Japan, they've got lots of good Bluebird 410/411 photos on their blog http://autoshiro.exblog.jp/i5/

Hey Ryan,

Glad to see another owner on here. The 3 speed column shift should fit no worries, you may just need to use the J13 flywheel & clutch, starter motor etc. Depending on what carby you use, you may need to steal the engine side plate with the breather on it as well.

All my rubbers would fall apart if I tried removing them, they have definitely seen better days. I think you can still find a front windscreen one from thailand (quality unknown), so I might try and grab one of those when the time comes as my front one is not good at all. The rest I'll deal with later.

I have come across that JP site before but cheers for re-linking as I don't think I'd saved it. Those rear drum cylinders they have on some of the pics look to be new items, so I'm going to see if the 510 shares any parts as I have a inkling they may be the same as 410, if not, will check out sp310/311 gear.

As you said, parts are hard to come by, but you just have to slowly build up some spares through yahoo jp and contacts locally to make it happen.

Make sure you create a build thread on here.

Replacing brake lines, for reasons below;

[ img ]

These are the back lines on a 411

[ img ]

Got a new flexible line made - $40. Then bought some bundy tube, then borrowed my mates brake flaring tool

[ img ]

Test flare

[ img ]

Then bought some new nuts from brake shop and carefully made the lines, then realised the brake place gave me the wrong nuts, then go the shits and gave up for a few days and travelled overseas for work.

Then last night I got motivated again and got the flexible line mounted and one side of the brake line done (yet to test fit!)

[ img ]

[ img ]

Re-used the old flare nuts as I couldn't be bothered driving to the brake shop again, just wizzed them with the electric drill with wire brush installed.

Want to get the back lines all done by this weekend. Have had the front hubs machined to suit the R31 rotors, then just need to check if new longer studs are required and begin the fitment on the front. All going well, mount brake master cylinder and sort out brake lines, then make push rod, then clean fuel tank and do fuel lines

This shitbox may move sometime this century!
