hey all, here is my 1600...

bought this in 2001 as a semi rusty original that hardly drove around the block. so straight into a rebuild, which was the plan when I bought it anyway.

no pictures of that rebuild until it was finished in 2002

all in all a nice 1600. but just a little boring :( especially as I put in a ca18 twin spark from a R31 wagon. but I don't have pictures of that...what a shame.

also I skimped on the rust repairs as I ran out of money and got a lot of the rust lead wiped. the rust showed up again very quickly.

anyway I drove it around like this pleasantly everyday but always wanting to do more exciting stuff to it. which slowly happened and is still currently happening.

so few years later I got some 15" wheels and some bucket seats that were the most uncomfortable things ever to sit in.

also the dash was boring as, and decided to go with something similar I had done to a previous Datsun from years before. only the tacho reads a little slow, the speedo flicks crazily so i disconected it. the fuel guage read empty when full and full when empty and the temp gauge only uses about 10% of the read out. stupid secondhand gauges. they are on the list to change when its back on the road.

also i put in a s14DE. factory N/A goodness.

so starting to get a bit more exciting to drive and look at and sit in. that was how it sat about 4-5 years ago perhaps.

its been off the road for the last 3 years for rust repairs (re visited) and also on hold as more important things to do in life. but more pictures soon...ish

next thing on the list was wheels. again. I wasn't happy with the sigma turbo rims and wanted something to fill the guards up a bit more. also wanted the handling to step up a notch as going to tuning days at Barbagallo raceway was fun. so I trolled through the Yahoo Japan and found these beauties. 15x7 +0. I new they wouldn't fit that well but new that I could make them work eventually.

mmm, very nice. but I couldn't bring myself to spending more money on the Datto after buying these and waiting 4 months for them to arrive. so the wheels sat a round for a few years but always wishing in the back of my mind that I could fit them.

fitment was not good as I knew... guards would have to be re worked. which was kind of OK as they were not fixed properly rust wise in the first re build and rust was starting to show through after 4-5 years of daily driving. but motivation was missing and had other things happening so the Datto took a back seat. as cars usually do.

also, notice the rust bubbling in the doors etc. it was starting to become annoying and wanted a rust free (as much as possible) car. i took it off the road 3 years ago so it wouldn't get wet and rust more before any decision was made to re build/de-rust her.

prety much all the rust gone from the car now so great. now i get it home and have to finish off the preparation for new paint.

sanding prime sanding prime bog sand prime oh what fun... so jump forward in time to a finished painted shell... ta'daa...

now it certainly inst a show quality finish but I did it myself in my garage and I think I did a pretty good job. one that I am very happy with anyway as I am not after a show car (no patience for that stuff, dont know how some of you guys do it) just a nicely painted fairly straight sealed rust free Datto.

so the front guards needed flaring now to cover the front wheels. I didnt have the money to pay some one so thought i would give it a go myself.

never welded much before but saw how the rust shop guys did the rear arches and thought its got to be easy with just the single fender skin.

so I papered up a lip to suit and bent some steel rod to the outline of the paper then cut up the perfectly good guard and thankfully it all worked out rather well.

also I have been looking at new gauges as most of mine don't work properly. the speedhut ones caught my eye. I may go for the blue ones which I found some pics of and photoshopped in. I'm usually a simple non fancy type but these blue ones might just add a small amount of interest without too much bling bling? although I think they will clash with the little red datsun sticker on my wheel. might do a few more angled photoshops before deciding.

OK bit of an update.

I got the new gauges but decided to stick with 'normal' looking black instead of the blue. I wont tire of them that way. they look nice with the blue lighting and they seem to work great. nice gauges from speedhut. just calibrated the speedo today. its just slightly off compared to the GPS i was using so will re do another time.

also the wheels were giving me angst as i didn't like the way they were painted. I tried painting them charcoal/black for the Japanese look but it just didn't seem to work on my car. which is a shame as I had my heart set on black wheels since the beginning of the rebuild.

so I didn't really like them plain silver or polished so decided to try some hubcaps and see if I could attach them on the 3 piece wheels. I had one at home and mocked it up and it fitted perfectly inside the rim section. anyway found some good ones on eBay and cut the rim off the back of them that holds them into the wheel. then a lot of trial and error i managed to screw them on with stainless screws. I don't have photos at the moment but the screws attach to a stainless tab that bolts under the nut of the rim/center section of the wheel. they wont fly off if I hit a curb that's for sure. they are centered very nicely so don't wobble when moving.

got some Venetians too and a sticker :)
