hey shawn,I wouldnt suggest using oil type filters with airflow meters, once oil gets on the hot wire in the afm it buggers em up.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into what I can use in the available space.
The filter on there now is a Supercheap K&N copy.

When I cleaned the filter and had the AFM out to fit the bonnet pins, I looked inside the AFM and it looked clean so I wiped it with a rag and it came out clean, so there was almost no residue. I didn't clean it with any spray though.

Been at the start of the Border Ranges Rally this afternoon, there's more Datsuns that Escorts this year.
We've moved to the Kyogle area, and on Sunday the Rally comes past our house!

Datsun has done a lot of miles lately moving house, a few heavy loads.
No issues at all except the sloppy rear end and some play in the steering box, that we already knew all about. Mileage is good except when overtaking - but that's how we like it

Only dramas came when the ignition key, a "cut" one, snapped off in the ignition switch with the car still on at a shopping centre a long way from home. Luckily we could easily stop the car and switch off the battery while we disassembled the column shroud and ignition switch to expose the actual plastic switch which we could operate with the remaining stub of a key (or anything else handy).
2nd drama came when locking the car up, and the last remaining open back door accidentally swung closed and was locked with some of our gear still in the car - Handy!
There was a "planes, trains and automobiles" thing to get the spare (original) key from home and unlock the car and retrieve important items. Ignition switch is all fixed up now and column shroud is back on and somewhat taped up. Looks a bit rough but it all works.

I'm messing around with the wheel alignment again - had it adjusted at a "professional" place for money. They seem to have set it with no toe in or out, which isn't so bad, except that it's vague and seems to exagerate the play in the steering box. There seems to be very little caster too, probably lessened a fraction when I lowered the front of the car a little.
Anyway, I've wound on a bit more caster and re-done the toe with a bit of toe-out this time. We'll see how it drives in the coming days. Once I like it a lot I'll take it to a wheel alignment place again and get them to record the settings for me.

No other major issues, electrics and engine never miss a beat. This is probably the easiest car to start that I've ever owned (and we've had some others from new) and is shaping up to be pretty damn reliable.

I mentioned the "elaborate" exhaust set up in someone elses thread and thought I'd put it in here too for the record. I'd better actually check and see what I really had under there since it's how the car was when we got it and been the last thing on the list to change, especially since the exhaust note is so excellent with some revs.

Home-made looking dump pipe off the stock red-top turbo with 3 inch pipe all the way to the the rear cross-member. Turbo flange looks like this is where they started practicing their welding. There's a hot dog near the rear cross-member, about 14 inches long, no known brand. There are bends in the main section of pipe as someone attempted to follow the path of the original pipe and keep some ground clearance - the car was fairly low when we got it.
From the rear cross-member the pipe changes to 2 inch pea-shooter pipe all the way past the diff and out to the back - no troublesome expensive mufflers here!
The rear section of pipe uses the standard path, under the half shaft, but still gives good ground clearance because of its small size. In rallying days we used to go up over the half-shaft with 2.5 inch pipe.
Revs and power could be limited by the small trail pipe, but the motor and ECU are stock so power is probably between 5 and 6000 rpm anyway, but it will rev to 7 if you ring its neck. The small pipe also keeps the noise down under normal driving conditions. We still have some of that deep sound of a turbo with big exhaust at idle and low revs without being loud - but at revs the sound turns into some sort of 4 cylinder road-bike type of noise and it's quite likeable.
The whole exhaust system if pieced together out of bits and pieces and is very unscientific, but it works well and makes a great noise.

Yesterday I got into the door hinges I bought off DAT04. My drivers door was in bad shape. I fixed up the best hinges so the spring mechanism worked and managed to swap out both drivers door hinges. Swapped the lower passengers door hinge. The hinges are a bit tight still, which is a major change from the doors swinging around in the breeze and either closing or swinging open when you don't want them too.

I adjusted my electronic speedo to read a little higher. I've noticed over time, compared to the GPS (phone), it reads 1 or 2 km/hr lower than the GPS. Should be safe in the 40 zones now.
I also added back in the injector duty cycle function and set its alert level to 80%, there's a super-bright white LED that ligts for that - I've tried and I can't make it get to that level, so I might lower it to 70 or 75% and use it like a shift light.
I'll try to get some video of the gauges in action and post here. Fitment is still a bit dodgy as it started out as an experiment, but since it's all working OK I better make the mounting (behind the dash facia) a bit more robust.

Does anyone else have a duty cycle gauge set up on a stock red-top SR20DET ? I'd be interested in comparing my readings with a commercial unit. I calibrated mine with a super-expensive Fluke multimeter with duty cycle function.

I read some more about injector duty cycle and realised that the ordinary electrical duty cycle that I'm measuring its almost useless. Still, if anyone had a working duty cycle gauge to compare with I'd still be interested is hearing about it - a few readings like idle, 2000rpm 4th gear, 3000rpm 4th gear, 6000rpm 2nd gear and some more...

The Datsun got to do a stage of the border ranges rally in both directions, one on the way to work early one morning in the dark, then again on the way home, also in the dark. Just a steady pace, don't want to crash and burn on the way to work! Wallabies keep the speed down too. Didn't develop any new rattles so that's good.
A cow on the highway made me test the brakes and tyres, pulled up from 100 in about 3 car lengths without locking a wheel (well it felt like only 3 car lengths).
Recently had to throw away the sealed beam hi/lo outer lights, put some cheap H4's in, about 1000% better. Will do the inner lights soon.

Just thought I'd post this link of my old datsun in case anyone liked the sound of webers on a L20B, I might have posted the link earlier...

http://youtu.be/hyNNY0i6S6Q

Also the Border Ranges rally is coming through again soon. The rally guys called in for a good ol' chat a couple of weeks back. The course comes right past home. I'll be up a nearby hill so I can see the cars coming and going for a good couple of kilometres.

Clutch hydraulics gave out mid-trip a while ago, that will teach me for checking fluids before driving. I should have left the bonnet closed and just driven off :) I had to stop and try and bleed the slave cylinder and put some coolant in the master cylinder, it worked better than nothing. The was no great problem driving without the clutch at highway speeds and even through the bendy parts, slow vehicles were the biggest hassle.
I've bled the clutch properly now and it seems at least back to its old self - time for a new master cylinder and a good look at the slave cylinder which is already a "PBR" aftermarket one. Probably time for a whole new set I think.
I also put a bottle of brake fluid in the tool kit.

New hydraulic clutch parts ordered. Bleeding up the old parts lasted about 3 seconds.

Datsport hydraulic clutch line, master and slave cyclinders fitted just in time last Friday to get into town for the start of the Border Ranges rally.
I know it's supposed to be a build thread but there's not much of that build stuff to report.

This 240K was pretty awesome, with all the right noise!

There was also a couple of nice 200SX's and a S13 Silvia featured in the next post

This guy in the S13 Silvia was leading and apparently uncatchable until this corner...
He was coming the opposite direction to what I'm facing when this photo was taken.

He misread the corner and overshot, took out the top strand of barbed wire on the fence and landed nose down in the paddock. The fence line is where those people are standing near the ute.

[ img ]

Doesn't look too bad from this side...

[ img ]

Not looking too good on this side, door pulled off by rescue crew due to possible back injury. Driver rushed to Lismore by helicopter, navigator taken by ambulance. Both OK in the end (as far as i know).
No idea what suspension, engine and body damage there was but I'd say it would be a fair mission to fix.
