In this case maybe it is rocket science?

dug out this harmonic balancer style front pulley, thinking about running this with the lightweight flywheel, ill see if it makes a difference.
then i might look at getting one of these
[ img ]
anyone used one of these pulleys?

[ img ]
heres my 71c gearbox, i just swapped the bellhousing with a 71b bellhousing, now its doing a bit of soaking, then im going to hit it with the gerni to clean it up.

so ill sway this gearbox with the gearbox in my car over the next couple of days, and ill put my flywheel in then.
i think ive got a tailshaft that will work with that gearbox, and ill have to mod the gearbox crossmember a bit aswell.

So my holidays got off to a good start.
I went out to the datto as I was going to fit my flywheel, opened the bonnet had a look at the engine and brought my arm out with a big f$&k off snake on my arm.
So I thought I'd give it a while before I had another crack.

So I dropped the box today. Changed the flywheel, put the clutch back on and put the 71c 5 speed in..

Old v new flywheel
[ img ]

[ img ]
Here's a pic of the clutch just a standard type clutch but it's a 225mm clutch it's a pbr I think, it has a great feel to it.

[ img ]
The old 71b box and the 71c box, it's a little bit longer, I had to add a bit of steel to gearbox cross member as the mounting point was about 30-40mm further back.

[ img ]
The old tailshaft for the 71b box at the top and the shorter one at the bottom, this was only JUST short enough, it really need another 10-20mm.

Anyway that flywheel makes an absolutely massive difference.
Noticeable strait at first start up. It's sound really cool. Revs rise and drop soo much faster while blipping the throttle, Sounds like a race engine now.
No real notice in driveabiltly issues, take offs and such, but response and acceleration has dramatically increased.
I honestly didn't think it would have made the difference it has.

Light flywheels are great! they make such a big difference.

Heavy flywheels suit grandma's parking outside k mart

i have a bit of a recuring vacuum leak from the inlet manifold face, when i ported the head the inlet port were raised along witht the manifold, and after i ported the and sent the head to be surfaced seats cut..... i forgot to have the holes welded up for the inlet manifold bolts.
so when i got it back and remembered i thought instead of sending it back out to get welded id just metal epoxy up the holes, and redrill them. so that worked for a while then the threads started to fail and i got a vacuum leak, so then i epoxied the studs in then that worked for quit a while but again, started to fail. so i whipped the head off and now its getting welded up.

all ive got here from the top end is the carbs, it was a rainy day today so id thought id give them a bit of a look at.
heres a suggestion from baz, he was abit shocked at the casting marks on the the aux vents and chokes

so i sanded them down nica and smooth
[ img ]
the chokes measured around 41.5mm i think there about 41.7mm now

You for real about the snake? Would have given you a decent fright!! Did you kill it, skin it, eat it, then fill the snake skin with your own piss and wear it as a necklace Bear Grills style?!?!

the other thing on the carbs i wanted to try out was some different ram tubes, according to an online ram tube length calculator i needed a ram tube length of 30mm at the moment mine are 60mm.
and what i dont like about these carbs is how it the ram tube goes from 47.5mmi.d then it hits the aux venturi which is 52mm i.d, then onto the choke which is 41.7mm from there it goes into the main bore of the carb body which is 47.5mm.
it all just seems like a bit of a mismatch.

[ img ]
here is the body of the carb, you can see the steps in diameter of the bore, at the throttle plate end its 47.5mm i.d, at the ram tube end its 55mm i.d, for a 55 dco carb they use the same carb body but the 55mm bore continues all the way through.

[ img ]

heres the carb with the 42mm choke fitted

[ img ]
then here is the carb with the 52mm i.d aux venturi fitted
this is what the 47.mm ram tube backs onto, so it goes from ram tube then quickly flares to 52mm(aux vent) the quickly reduces to 41.7mm(choke)

[ img ]

this is with the factory ram tube fitted, you can see the how it flares out after the end of the ram tube into the aux vent, then quickly reduces again into the main choke

heres my ram tubes i made, they cost me $10, i just got a piece of exhaust pipe, had the end flared at the exhaust shop then cut a another ring of pipe and brazed in onto the tube so it would slide into the carb body. if they do work ill make some nice ones out of stainless tube.

but i cut some slots in the ram tubes so they slide over the aux vents.
[ img ]
[ img ]

so now with the ram tubes sliding over the aux vents, the ram tube actually backs onto the main choke now, so it a nice strait shot of the ram tube now at 47.3mm i.d all the way to the main choke at 41.7mm then back onto the main bore at 47.5mm, so the carb is virtually the same size all the way through execpt for the choke obviously.

not bad for $10 to see how they go,
they will be run up on the dyno along with the factory ones to compare.
if they work better ill make some up out of stainless pipe.
there will be more room to build an air box or run air filters over the smaller tubes aswell which im looking forward to.
