Hello all,

Well here is my Datsun 1600 I bought a few weeks back, I believe it's a 68 model, or possibly a early 69?

This is now the third one I've owned, however it will be the first one I've built myself (with help from friends and ozdaters)
So now I have my own place, thought it was a grand idea to sell my CA powered 510 and make full use of my garage.
I was looking at buying somthing else for a change, but theres just somthing about the 1600 :)

Pretty much standard, have most the parts in boxes, all in all I think its in good condition, minimal rust and all original paint except the boot.
Rust in rear quarters, tiny bit where rear window sits, boot channel, and sill. I'm probably nieve but it appears pretty decent to the naked eye, floors and engine bay apear tip top.

Plan is at the moment to keep it L series however equiped for a possible SR down the track.
So main priority now is tidying up the body.

Not trying to build a show car or anything, I still want it to be rough around the edges so I can treat it like a filthy pig of a datsun.

Ive propably bit off more than I can chew in terms of a project and my capabilities, but I dont care if it takes me years.

Cheers,
Tim

Definately a 68.
Looks like a good solid shell overall and lucky you got it before too many mods were done to it.
Rust is minimal considering age but the early jap built cars seem to have better rust protection than the later aussie assembled ones.
Great find!

First update!

Hi guys, thought its about time I gave this an update.

Soo the build has changed directions to my first post, seems to be a common thing.
I was originally going to tidy it up a lil bit, but figured a may aswell do the long haul.. and also going SR

Started stripping the rest of the gear, dash, bay, fuel tank ect

Bought a bonnet and guard as I was missing those panels, also another front apron.

So with the shell stripped i took it to get blasted & etch primed.

Very happy with how it came up, no major suprises.

Also first time ive had a bonnet on it, minor milestone. Looking like a car!

Even dummy fitted the grille

Bringing back a lot of memories looking at a 1600 just in primer. You've got a while to go yet! all part of the fun though. What are those wheels off? Don't think i've seen those before.

If you're after 68/69 headlight and wiper switches, let me know as i've got a both in good condition. I've got a '71 have no need for them.

Thanks guys,

[ img ]

This photo shows my little welding knowledge.
I'm all setup now with gas, equipment ect, have been just experimenting with different setting on scrap metal, and watching lots of youtube tutorials!
If you want somthing bad enough you just have to jump in and learn it.

I've started on the repairs and should have alot more done over the weekend.

My priorities at the moment is
- Repairing all rust with new metal
- Fitting the gearbox ( need to buy bolts aswell )
- Getting a cooler and rad setup, then tidying up engine bay

:)

Hello all,

Have been working on the rust repairs, coming along slowly but surely.

I'm taking a bazzillion pics of the whole build, everyone loves pics :) just half will be good camera and half on my phone.

Anyways, started the area around rear windscreen. I'm workning on the 'easier' repairs first.

First pic before blasting,

Had a few issues around where the factory lead wiping is, also a few touch up welds places i missed.
The finned section at the bend didnt run to smoothly but turned out OK, i did a few too many cuts then was nesasary and the gaps were too big

I've just drowned it in primer for now

[ img ]

Still needs fine touches, sanding, filling ect before paint
But I can tick it off the list for now.
It's far from a pro job but its also far better then a gaping rusty hole :)
