Handbrake kit is commercially available in couple different setups. E.g. for rear drums. from USA summit racing. Wasn’t expensive either I think I paid about 150-180 for the whole kit.

Currently the rear hubs are just re drilled to 5 stud. Will get them sent off soon to get properly done.

Any more progress?

I'm keen to hear what you think of the subaru seats?

What did you do to fit the rears? Did you cut the rear mounts off and make your own or adapt the OEM Subaru ones?

Biggest reason i sold the ones i had was because of 1. The weight. 2. I couldn't get them low enough without a lot of work, and i couldn't get the drivers seat low enough in the front compared to the rear for the height adjustment mechanism to work properly.

Interested to hear your thoughts?

Sorry real lazy on the photos. hoping to get the car regod oct/nov so slamming everything.
Both quarter panels are on
Sound deadener the whole car
Now just painting bits on the car
things to do:-
paint
heater
rear seat belts
put dash and bits together
wire up the parkers and indicators lights
carby tune
also work out how to adjust the wilwood rear brake valve

I found the wrx seats to be a good fit. I removed the small brackets on the sliders and left the sliders on the seat. bolted the 1600 mounts to the sliders and had to redrill the mount holes on the floor. At the moment when I sit in the car it feels like a good height but I’ll let you know in couple months when I’m actually on the road driving. It’s a tight squeeze to get to the back seats so I might got FT86 seats in the future.

I put s15 seats in the back. Good fit just have to make mounts

Regod yesterday and a quick drive after work. very slow with the L18 doing about 4k rpm at 100km. Need to decide if I want to keep going with it and put a sr20 or sell and buy rx7 or evo.

That looks great mate!
Im keen to see more photos. Id love to see pics of what you did to mount the seats.

Imo, the effort of building the car is worth enjoying it. It'll never be as quick as an evo or wrx unless you turbo it. But a well sorted L series can go just as quick around the race track. Every 1600 is turbocharged now, i'd much prefer an L series again.

Gearing like you've described would make me think you've got a 5.1 ratio diff in there or something. Mine is a 4.44 and it sits at about 3000rpm at 100km/h.

These things are all about the feel and rawness. I think take your time to enjoy it a bit more for a while.

Good job!

Great effort mate. Looks ace.
Enjoy it a bit before making a decision to keep/sell/upgrade.
If you are dedicated to it, it will be worthwhile.
Drive an Evo, RX7 and it may do it for you, but every time I get into my Datsun, it just feels like a car should. Feedback, response, feel and smiles on the dial...

I'm loving the turbo SR in mine, but occasionally I do lust after a stroked/balanced L series with fuel injection. Then I plant my foot and all is forgotten.

Rear seats were a rush job. Bolted down the bottom with the standard s15 mounts. Top I made some brackets out of sheet metal to hold the top. Need to get some 5mm steel rod and make a proper mount.

Haven’t taken it for a proper drive yet which is killing the mood. Hopefully this weekend take it out for couple hours. Drove it a bit harder tonight feels like it has more power than yesterday. First drive I thought a wheel or something was gonna fly off or engine catch on fire so was driving like a granny.

I do like having the L engine but power wise it’s not doing much for me.
It has a 4 speed with 3.9 diff. Speedo is in miles and probably has wrong gearbox gear drive ratio and bigger wheels probably going faster than what the speedo was saying. I’ll take the Navman next time

Drove it in the rain tonight Glad I put the bigger brakes on pulls out better than a lot of new cars.
Car is draining the battery somewhere have to fix that. Definitely not the lights or any accessories because it was draining it when it had none. Maybe the alternator is drawing power?

It’s has kbs diamond clear coat on it once it starts giving me troubles it will get a proper paint job.
