I've owned the old girl for the last 17 years or so. Last registered and used as a daily in 2005. Finally decided to go the whole rebuild thing. Once I have worked out how to post pictures (keeps telling me my file is to big) I'll post some. Going to go down the CA18det path. Car went well with a healthy L18 so the addition of some forced induction and injection should make for an entertaining and reliable ride. The CA uses pretty much the same management system as a VL commy or R31 Skyline doesn't it? Did a lot of VL work seeing I was an apprentice when they came out and worked for Holden. |

nice one lets see some pics. ive been using a program called IrfanView for ages and never had any dramas with it. im sure there is other similar softwares out there also. its a free download, google it. you just open the pic and either use the crop or resize/resample features or a combination of both. it also allows you to save out the pic quality. coverts a 4mb pic to a .4mb pics easily plus has some other cool features. |

Beauty...got it working. Here is the build so far in an edited timeline of photos. Paid stuff all for the ca18det and it was complete less turbo, loom and flywheel.

Thanks. I'm probably like everyone else on this site. I love this car. The other half wanted me to sell it before I started this journey because it was sitting in the shed rusting away. I interpreted that as 'you should have started years ago'. lol. If anyone has got any tips or tricks, I'm all ears. I'm a qualified auto mechanic, who diverted firstly to highway trucks and then into the big stuff in mines, so any panel repair tips or advice is welcome (I'm learning as I go). |

Anyone fitted an r200 to a 1600 rear frame? A little 'cut and shut' is normal? Mine is within about a 1/2 an inch of the bolts lining up before the housing hits on the frame. And spacers???? top, bottom???? |

Got my military plug for the firewall. 30 pins. Should make it easier to disconnect and reconnect. May have to slightly modify the inner guard to provide access and room to be able to fit but, it won't much more than the small recess that you have to make for the 180b booster. Dash support panel is back in as well as some fire wall insulation. I've modified the heater tap setup as well (photos to follow soon). Basically a generic straight heater tap and one of the heater hoses off a 'vq' statesman cut up for the needed bends.

Quick question. The CA18det I acquired, for not a lot of money, had water in the oil. Now on disassembly I noted that A: the thermostat was fitted incorrectly, B: all the welsch plugs were rusted (old mate said that he used to go through water and didn't know why, probably the rear plug as it was almost gone completely), C: smelled like it had be a little hot, D: number 1 combustion chamber was a bit cleaner than the others (water entry), E: all the main and big end bearings are still good and that the engine wound over freely although didn't have a lot of compression. The question is: the standard oil coolers, have they got any issues (thinking that's where the oil/water issue has come from and the low compression is because of getting hot due to the thermostat. I will get the block and head crack tested but the gasket was fine (visually) and I cannot see any cracks in the block with 'dye checker' ( that's the white stuff in the engine pic of a previous post) |

Although the engine is a ways off being built yet, I was thinking forged rods and maybe pistons (depends if I can find a reasonable package deal), cams (haven't decided but won't be standard, anyone reco any?), quality gaskets, ARP head bolts, aftermarket exhaust manifold and T28 turbo, intake (TBA) and management will be decided according to what internal mods happen. Don't really want it to be an untamed animal but good solid, drivable, reliable "fun" would be nice. |
