And even more of the "Woo Hoo".

Despite all the bad press CAMS get, sometimes they do good. My logbook is in the post (express post) despite only lodging my application at 4pm yesterday !

It is now officially logbooked as Group 3C PRC - Production Rally Car. CAMS logbook scrutineer seemed to think this was the most applicable category, I was originally thinking "Improved Production" but went with his suggestion. Not that it really matters, I currently have no intention of using it outside Supersprints, regularity, hillclimbs, etc.

Bathurst done and dusted. Luckily not so much of the "dusted", only went bush twice running wide in the chase at the end of conrod straight.......

The 1600 did over 200 kilometers at race speed over the weekend, only issues were a slight miss at sustained high revs (ie flat out down conrod and up mountain straight).

I have in-car footage, will edit and post tonight.

I really need more power - I found it frustrating being overtaken up mountain straight with the overtaking car getting a lot of distance on me, only to catch them by McPhillamy Park and then be held up badly till they took off down conrod straight. Then repeat next lap.

Apart from minor carburetion ossues, my only other drama was destroying a brand new full slick. Was old stock, not sure if the tyre was at fault or my suspension settings ? It developed a large "lump" or "egg" across half the tread and maybe 1/3 of the way around the tyre. Made for an interesting ride down conrod straight with the tyre being about 15mm out of round

Great work dave

Interesting about the slick issue. Looks like a tyre manufacturing issue?

Sounds like you need a Ka twin cam head on that l18 block for a bit more grunt

Geez that tyre would have made for an interesting ride. When did that develop?
I was watching from the kink on Conrod for your last session and didn't notice anything like that.

The 1200 was quite the weapon.

Sorry I didn't come and introduce myself but each time I came by you we're busy.
I hope to join you on track next year Mate.

It was an amazing experience, made even better by the way we were treated by the organisers. The Qld Z Car Club, plus a lot of extras / hangers-on, filled one complete session out of the 5 for the event, and provided around 50 volunteers (mainly flag marshals) over the 4 days of the event. The organisers made the effort to find us in our section of the paddock campground one night to thank us, and we had quite a few of the other officials join us at different times for a drink or two. The organisers also arranged for all volunteers (myself included, I flagged for two days) to do a "hot lap" in a V8 "supercar" with one of those "Supercar Experience:" outfits.

I'll be going back for another attempt next year. Will be trying harder for a trophy as well - they were presented on the Bathurst podium (yes, same one they use for V8 supercars, etc) which would be an awesome experience. Here's a few of our group on the podium.

Anyway, a few videos.

First one is one of the few "clean" laps I got with no traffic. Was the first session after I switched from brand new slicks to 7 year old semi slicks, was taking it a little too gingerly while getting used to the old tyres. I manage to brake way too early at Skyline and Forest Elbow, and a little early in a few other spots. 6 speed gearbox / 4.44 diff combo is great, the only time I couldn't find the perfect gear was through the cuttting. Too fast for 2nd, wouldn't pull 3rd up the 1 in 6 grade coming out of the corner.

2nd vid is the right front tyre failing. I stay right down conrod to allow a faster car through, my car shoots right as the other car passes (at the time I assumed it was some weird aero effect from the passing car), then won't stop or turn at the left hander coming out of the chase. Coz22a, by the last session I was back on the above-mentioned 7 year old semi slicks. Hope you enjoyed watching all those beautiful Datsuns (and my old thing....) lapping Mt Panorama

Looks like awesome fun, if a little daunting. You have some fairly large cahjones Dave coming into the left hander after conrod with the tyre like that.

More a case of lack of brains.....

I didn't realize exactly what the problem was so I completed that session (another few laps) with it getting harder to brake or turn left and vibrating worse with every passing lap. In hindsight, the clever thing would have been to pull into the pits and check it out at the first sign of something wrong.

Mt Panorama is a little daunting, but very satisfying to get even close to right. We were lucky enough to have a very experienced racer in our group who took us on a track walk one evening pointing out the correct lines, etc. I particularly loved Skyline down to Forest Elbow. Wasn't so keen on the straights, although turn 2 (fast right hander at the end of mountain straight) was pretty quick / exciting.

It's an interesting situation, and you are probably right. If in doubt pull over or slow down and get into the pits. The last thing you want to do is damage yourself, your car or anything else.

Something similar happened to me where I was an Phillip Island, and wafts of steam were appearing under the bonnet. Flaggies mustn't have known, but I did and decided to pull into the pits right away. I sheared the turbo water cooling line! Lucky I didn't cook the motor...

Interesting angle - from a flag marshal's perspective.
