I would imagine that's do-able somehow, but probably easier to bolt a 5-speed back in if it comes to that. Then bolt the 6 speed in after its log-booked.

Its an interesting area, you only log-book the car for one category but a lot of people will want to run their car in more than one category. Which I guess is where the scrutineers for each event come into things, they decide whether you meet the regs for the event. As lampy says, I could log book it as a rally car but still compete in Improved Prod circuit racing so long as it meets the regulations for IP. I would assume you can only use the log book in categories with lesser safety requirements - an improved production car, for instance, can get by with a less substantial cage than a rally car so although I could race IP with a rally logbooked car, I would guess you can't go rallying with an IP-logbooked car ??

I'll find out soon enough, the guy doing the cage bending preps a few race cars so I'll hit him up tomorrow for recommendations as to a log book scrutineer / inspector in the local area.

Big job to change the gearbox, what about putting a 5 speed gear knob on it. The worst thing they could say is 'no' if it was picked up.

DIY roll cage. Now to get it in the car instead of decorating the shed floor.

Shed is even messier now that the dash is spread all over the floor.

Several years ago I spoke to a guy with a Lotus Elan track car, he had installed a Supra 5-speed but had set it up so that there was a special technique to select fifth gear, for the same reason. He said it had never been picked up on whilst being scrutineered. So I am sure it is possible.

Another fan of the gearbox crossmember mount here  never mind this roll cage business, I am more interested in seeing how this holds up!

Gearbox mount actually seems to work

No more rattling and banging on the trans tunnel / gearlever hole.

Making a roll cage isn't as easy as it sounds......

Getting there though. Added in a few extra bars along the way, so now I've run out of tube

Main cage complete. Only things left are to make and fit backstays from main hoop to rear of car, fit a diagonal between the backstays and fit a harness bar.

Cage making is harder work than I thought  . Not so much the technical side of it, but physically climbing in and out of the car dozens of times just to make and fit one bar. And the more of the cage that's made and fitted, the harder it is to climb in and out. Maybe I'm just getting too old.....

C'mon Dave... I wouldn't have thought you played on the monkey bars much recently?
On a side note, it's looking pretty good mate!

My main consideration for positioning the door intrusion bar was ease of getting in and out. For the same reason, I went with a single intrusion bar so I didn't have to navigate masses of tube to enter the car.

The other issue I've had is getting everything (TIG filler rods, welding cables, angle grinder power cord, etc) tangled up in the bars as I work. Ohh, and grabbing / leaning against just-welded bits of the cage.....

It's ended up being a more substantial cage than I was originally going for. I was at a local hillclimb just before I started the cage when a 180B driver managed a double rollover, including one roll that saw him land on the other side of the tyre barriers. He was uninjured, car was a mess, roof squashed down onto the roll cage. Seeing someone I know have such a big accident made me look at it more as an important safety device than something CAMS were making me fit in order to obtain a logbook.

I've gone with the main hoop, front legs, windscreen bar and backstays in 44.45mm dia tube (up from the 38.1mm that CAMS are happy with for everything except main hoop), added an extra diagonal to the main hoop, added the diagonal braces from main hoop to front legs you can see in the pic I posted, it has a roof diagonal from driver's side of windscreen bar to passenger side of main hoop, and I will be putting a diagonal from the chassis mounting point of the passenger side backstay to the top of the driver's side stay as well as a tube between the base of the backstays (this will double as a harness mounting bar, in addition to the bars in the main hoop for wrapping the harness around).
