I got home without leaving anything on the caravan's roof this year  .

That's our setup - the car from the people next to us parked about where I took that photo from, resulting in having to swing the commodore out backwards.

I managed to get a bit too enthusaistic on the steering wheel, and hooked one of the guy ropes holding the annexe up with the front wheel, which ripped the tent pole out of the annexe and brought it smack down onto the top of the front guard and the bonnet of the commodore. Result - one big scratch right down to bare metal and two slightly smaller dents.

What made it worse was that Bronwyn had only told me a second or so earlier that I was getting too close to it

We have plenty of trees at home as well, the commodore has little dents all over it from small sticks / branches falling on it, and is three slightly different shades of silver from a few bits of accident repair over the years. Its just looking really tatty, and I could give it a quick straighten up and paint in a weekend or two to get it looking nice again.

Or I could take the eqasy way out and just trade it in

LOLZ! What is it with you & 'Camping Incidents' Dave? :giggle:
I have to say, when we ended up sleeping in the same bunk room I found you to be perfectly normal, the only weird thing that happened was when I woke up in the middle of the night, saw you, and couldn't work out where I was. No incidents happened at all, perhaps because Lurch slept at the other end of the cabin :giggle:

Wasn't a full moon that weekend

Lurch is referring to last year's Xmas pilgrimmage to South West Rocks, when I managed to drive all the way home with a big shifting spanner sitting on the roof of the caravan after I put it there when taking the jockey wheel off.

Strayed from Nissan / Datsun and got a Toyota

The D40 Navara's just didn't seem to grab us, D22 Navara seemed better, but didn't have enough rear legroom for the kids. Also looked at the usual range - Mitsubishi Triton, Ford Ranger / Mazda BT-50, Holden Rodeo / Colorado / Isuzu D-Max.

Ended up with this one because it seemed to be the roomiest and easiest to drive (important as the wife will be using it). It seemed more car-like on the road, the others were a bit rougher / less comfortable. We weren't that concerned with offroad ability, we won't be doing any hardcore 4WD'ing - just up the local beach (Stockton) and up the mountains, any 4WD in this class should be more than adequate for what we will do.

Plus this particular one was a good buy (I think). 2006 SR Hilux 4X4 (so the base model), but previous owner fitted just about every option tha Toyota makes for it, from bonnet protector right through to rear canopy, side steps, towbar, huge bullbar (important if you own a 4WD, apparently  ), even an LSD (which I believe were only standard on the top of the range SR5 model). From what we can see, they used it for a 10,000k trip, then the next 2 and a half years it did another 10,000k. So, its basically brand new with only 20,000k's on it.

Should be just the thing for towing the datto and the caravan

Why did I get the feeling you were going Shitota? (looks nice though).

First thought was to get a Navara. D22 was too small, and the D40 just didn't grab us for lots of little reasons - nothing major, just small things.

We thoroughly investigated all models in this category and kept coming to the same conclusion - Hilux may not be best at anything, but it's a good all-rounder. Only downside is that they command a price premium over the competition which most people seem to think isn't really justified. This one was a good price, so we got it. Just have to pay for it now (well, for the next 7 years)

Only thing the Hilux fails at is that it only has a 2250kg towing limit compared to 3000kg for the most of the competition. Our caravan is only 1000kg fully loaded, the datto isn't much over 900kgs plus the trailer at maybe 500kg ?? so the lower towing limit won't effect us.

The kids have christened him Hercules the Hilux, to match Cleopatra the Caravan :giggle:.

Yep, a workmate is right into 4WD'ing - he has a D22 and loves it. I took it for a drive a few weeks back and was impressed, so we started out looking at them. Unfortunately, the rear seat legroom just wasn't enough to fit the kids in ( the eldest daughter is nearly 14 and growing real fast).

This one was $35k, which was way less than most other Hilux's we looked at. Since it still has a week left of the original factory warranty, for another $1495 I can buy Toyota's extended factory warranty, so its basically covered for a further 3 years / up to 100,000k's by the factory warranty.

Just got to learn how to drive it offroad now. The only offroad driving I've done previously is throwing my old 1600 round the forestry tracks in the state forests years ago
