Hey all,

This account will be used by Adam*, Rhys and Simon. We've recently bought a 1981 L16 Datsun Stanza and will be modifying and improving it (hopefully). The goal is to convert it to manual with an SR20DET engine. We can appreciate the difficulty of this project but we're charging in anyway aha.

This is it!

We picked it up for $1100 running like a dream.
L16 Engine
Auto gearbox.
Stock as.

For starters we're going to:
- Patch up a few rusty areas around the doors and windscreen.
- Pull the engine and running gear apart.
- Fill up a shed with asorted Stanza bits.

We're all fairly new to Datsuns so any tips, advice or comments will be helpful.
Its likely to be a fairly long build as the 3 of us are Uni students, apprentices and broke teenagers trying to work on our own cars as well :chaching: :

So feel free to lend advice and suggest parts, tips and ideas!
Adam

First job was to clear out the shed!

Looking much better undercover!

Then we got to work on the rust. Luckily it had only eaten the surface in most of the spots, and a bit of sanding and fibreglass should get it looking mint! I'll upload photos soon.

And on to the wrecking:
All the fluids drained and bits and pieces starting to go.
[ img ]

This is how its sitting at the moment. We'll have more progress soon.
[ img ]

We managed to get the exhaust out in one piece. Nothing is easy though when this is as high as we can get the car.

More to come soon!

SRs into stanza is an easy conversion. Just need 2 engine mounts & a custom front bar.
No fitting kit or modified xmembers are needed.

Really? If that's true then it should save us a load of cash.

We were under the impression that we needed xmembers for the engine and gearbox.
I have heard that certain Silvia engine mounts will bolt straight in though? I think.

Maddat sells this 'SR to Stanza' kit for $830
This is the last resort, obviously.

I'm doing the same conversion in a 1980 Stanza. I will be watching this with interest as I think you might be through it quicker than I will.

we also have a Legnum :)

Our Stanza conversion requires 2 engine mounts $60.
The transmount used is the original, just redrill the SR isolator ( rubber mount)
Our bar is 24mm and fits behind the sump.
Engine fits like it came ex factory.
Modifying the crossmembers is a waste of money.

I also have a legnum as a daily driver its a white vr4 wagon just like the one in your sig

good work with the sr conversion, keen to see how you go with it. I have just rebuilt an L18 nd spent more than an SR conversion :) I knew it was going to cost what it did but th car is going on club rego and the club said it had to be original engine.

So my missus has a 79 Stanza and the L16 has just spat the second head gasket, i now have a bit more time on my hands so I'm looking at doing an Sr swap aswell!
Any progress on your conversion guys?
Also interested in any more tips from the guys who have done it before, particularly with the Wiring and Fuel system.
I'm guessing buying an engine with the loom and then just finding all of the necessary wires?
All help would be greatly appreciated!

I saw the Datsport Stanza when I was over in Adelaide a couple of years ago. Looked like the SR was meant to be there! When you guys wanna go fast around a track or want the Stanza to handle, speak to Baz/Trace/Cam at Datsport...
