Update:
Turns out, this car has been in my town it's whole life. It was logbook serviced for 2 years after being bought, before being sold off and rallied for 3 years. This owner put the L20B in, which apparently went very well with a weber, an unknown cam, and a lot of head work. This owner then sold it to a used car dealer, where the last owner bought it cheap after it was damaged in very large hail storm. It was driven as a daily until 2010 when some crash damage in 2007 (that the insurance company wouldn't repair, instead they wrote it off) (that's the damage seen on the front bumper/guard - apparently someone reversed into them) caused too much rust to pass rego.
It was sold to the scrappy very recently when the family got sick of it lying around in the yard waiting to be done up, and then I got it.
Spent a couple of hours on the weekend looking the old girl over with a mate (who was hoping for a drive
). Unfortunately the old girl is rather rough around the edges due to a long while of being daily driven by non-mechanical owners, and worked on by some dodgy workshops
.
There is a fair bit of rust in the boot, floorpan and front of the car, and that's from a very quick checkover. It also needs a fair bit of major body work from previous crash damage that has gone either unrepaired or repaired badly.
The engine runs (on start you bastard anyway), but the cooling system is full of oil/rust (and doesn't hold water for any extended period of time) and the oil is full of water, so it definitely needs a headgasket and several cooling/oil system flushes at least. It sounds alright though, so hopefully no major rebuild will be necessary. The fuel tank/system was bone dry, so it's all undoubtedly full of rust, and the carburettor probably needs an overhaul too. The interior needs a tidy up as well as the exterior, and it needs some electrical work too.
