I would suspect the top gear in the 5spd boxes is an overdrive, just that it is not in both the 3 and 4 speed gearboxes

Okay so the light assemblies have arrived from Japan. Does anyone know of a good home for the extra indicator lenses?I assume they are 430 units but I'm not sure. I don't want to collect parts like that haha

They sure do, it's quite funny actually; the tail/brake housing actually has a twin-filament globe and also a little parker-style globe beneath it. Haven't checked the wiring diagram on that yet...

Just a little update.

I'm getting a bit more pumped to do some work on this car after meeting the NSW crew the other week. Been fiddling with some little details here and there but to keep at it. Really love the car and it has been quite trouble-free which has got me a bit lazy overall I guess.

I gained access to a massive stockpile of TB42 water pump impellers... There are about 500 that have been pulled off GQ water pumps and replaced with fabricated stainless impellers for improved cooling systems. They are inadequate for a GQ but I believe they are quite reasonable for an L-series pump. And relatively easy to machine up so that they fit too!

Was thinking of making a batch of these things and sending them out across Australia to everyone with an L6 or even L4s which I assume are the same. Comments?

Also had the doortrims off today and just retorqued the bolts that hold the rear speakers in and Loctite'd them up. Had a bit of rattling going on so that has improved that a bit. I think one of the rear doors' window frames is prone to hitting the jam and making shitty vibrations. A new door seal might sort it out but not one drop of water has ever leaked into this car so I'm not 100% sure that's the problem.

Need to get my bum into gear for this L28 swap haha. Don't really hang around with any Nissan guys so I get distracted with other cars.

I love what you've done to that water pump.

On Hybridz, there have been long threads looking into alternatives to the almost obsolete high volume, LD28 water pump.

Apart from removing the cheap pressed sheet impeller, were there any other modification you made to the water pump?

Can the cast impeller's diameter be measured so we can see if it's as big as the LD28 one?

Also can the cast impeller be pressed on further so there is virtually no gap to the face of the water pump?

Dave needs one of these as a spare incase his LD28 pump expires eventually. I wouldn't mind one or two myself. The place to go with all those cast impellers is Hybridz...

Over on Hybridz, they hate the fabricated impellers! When they hear how many you have....OMG!

There's supposed to be issues with cavitation and poor life expectancy (pitting/corrosion) with the fabricated ones. Never seen a cast one like that!

...Hmmm, interesting.

Lots to talk about here.

Firstly, just to clarify. There are cast impellers and pressed impellers, a fabricated impeller is something different again (like a custom hand-made unit with laser cut sheetmetal welded up). Everything came standard with cast, most (not all, but probably all L-series) replacement OEMs like GMB etc are pressed stainless. Fabricated can be VERY good, and usually isn't bothered with unless people know what they're doing.

I can actually grind out the timing case and the pump housing and get an extra few mm of diameter out of that cast impeller. The cast impeller starts at Ø75mm, and I turned it down to make it Ø72mm, which means you can just bolt it into any old L-series and it will work. Can always go a bigger impeller in the future if need be.

Can it be pressed on so that it's really close on the back? YES you could but you don't want that. A deeper cast impeller would possibly be beneficial, but one of the crucial dimensions is the proximity of the 'top' of the impeller blades to the tapered (kinda conical) shaped seat in the timing cover. You want to get that close, the back doesn't matter nearly as much. I actually pulled mine forward 1-1.5mm after that photo just to get that clearance to be finer after checking it with plasticine.

Modifications? well I just deburred everything and made it nice to feel and look at, cleaned up all the crappy cast surfaces on the inside, and the timing case obviously needs to be 'ported' a bit with a dremel/die grinder because it has some bad casting marks in the transfer passage. Apart from that? Well that's a bloody good start. Next problem is getting hot coolant away from the exhaust ports, but that will be another chapter.

Just a small update but it was a really satisfying little job.

My JDM tail lights had the plugs just cut off by the person in Japan. Should have never happened because there's a plug a few inches into the guard, but that's how some cunce roll. Anyway, I went to a wrecker and grabbed some little female plugs, ground them down so that I could pull the 'push-in' terminals & wires in, then fitted them to the plugs from my old tail-light housings which I had to cut off. Made up little looms and now it works like it should.
